I am big into scuba. Along with skydiving, rock climbing, drinking, and fishing, I frequently meet divers who are fishkeepers. I was wondering how many of you are here? Really, I am more interested if anyone dives to collect specimens?
I have seen burp guns for collecting and there is always floating the bag and scaring them into it, but what about monsters? Nets? traps? hooks? How about adapting specimens to tank life? How about doing this to supply a LFS to offset the cost of diving? I mean, I've seen some neat fish/different species and a mid-atlantic wreck or reef setup would be really neat.

I've been PADI cert'd since age 12. Also certed in advanced, deepwater, wreck, cave, safety, and dive master. I've gone diving for specimen collecting numerous times in FL, HI, the PI, Thailand, and the IO. More frequently, I dive for fossil collecting and megalodon shark teeth are my main focus. Although, I have collected lots of ray, gar, turtle, mammoth, crab, and 3-toed horse fossils. I have some of the shark teeth posted MFK.
I am just getting started in SCUBA, I have yet to get certified, but this is something I want to do. I bought an instructional CD-ROM on ebay, the same one the military uses for SCUBA. I just got a wetsuit, and a good pair of goggles, now all I need is flippers, and of course tanks, reg, etc. This is a dream of mine, hopefully it will come true shortly.

I have dove FL jamacia grandcayman cozumel and have collected shells and stuff there, but never fish. I do all my collecting by net, crayfish by trap. My favorite dive spot is okoboji IA, its a blue water lake, one of only 7 in the world they say, bass are my favorites down there, they follow you around along with the sunfish, good dive buddies

Same here - except cave, have yet to do that. I know I am going to move towards that soon though, since next summer when I go to Greece, I am fully planning on checking out the caves there! Most of the collecting I have done in the past was not for personal enjoyment, but for work. Doesn't mean I didn't personally enjoy it though, LOL. I would be carefull though if that is what you are contemplating. Read into the Laws/Rules/Regs. of it BEFORE, LOL. Some places are highly protected, and most places have stringent regs. that need to be followed or you can find yourself in some hot water. Either way, I love to dive, and anyone who's never done it, OMG, what are you waiting for??
