I bought a "freshwater" snowflake eel of the Gymnothorax tile variety that I have placed with my albino moray which due to information I have researched I am assuming it is Echidna rhodochilus. The moray "trademark" of opening and closing its mouth to breath is not happening with my albino. The snowflake is breathing in such a manner and I was told by the owner where I buy my fish food that he was a very beautiful and healthy moray as I had just bought him from another shop and went to get some food from my favorite shop on my way home and showed them.

Does anyone know the growth cycles of morays? I know they are born in one form and around 3 yrs. change into elvers. Are there species of moray that do not breath the same way or do they eventually over time grow and change into breathing this way?

They are both approximately the same lenghth except the snowflake is flat on the sides with fins to the tail while the albino is more or less round behind the neck with a tail that comes to a point with no fins.

I have no problem with them getting along so far but the snowflake took over the albino's hiding place and I place another one for him and have no obvious problems with him however the snowflake likes to stay in his hole and I have not ssen him come out or eat. He is alive and well at this time and sharing his hiding place with an African leapard bushfish. I have only had him for almost a week. Food is easily obtained without coming out of his hiding place as I have live food in my tank, but should I be more concerned about him not coming out or not eating?

Morays typically will go on food strike. Can last days, or weeks. It is usually after moving to a new tank, and even in an established home that they have been in for years they will go on strike. It is just how they are.

I was lucky with my 22" moray, the first day I got him he sniffed the food. Second day he was tearing up the market shrimp. I guess he couldnt resist

Some adjust to captivity quite well. My LFS has a dragon moray, and it didn't eat for a month. Still there too, nobody has $1000 to drop on it...........:(

I have them in brackish water and the snowflake finally has decided to come out of hiding and investigate his surroundings last night. I am hoping he will start eating I would like to hold off feeding non live food till he gets bigger. Both snowflake and albino are a little over 12"
