I'll tell you right now that lobster isn't fake. I've seen one in person at our local marine biology center here in Nova Scotia Canada. It still lives today at the same center. From what I can remember ours is half blueish and half the normal dark color. They say it is half female and half male or something like that but don't expect it to live it's normal life span.

The one that was caught 2 years ago went a step further. Not only was it half normal color and half albino, it was also a hermaphrodite with fully functional male and female sex organs.
Wonder what that would cost for the home aquarium?????
Probably thousands. How many specimens do you know that are one in 50-100 million?

I's say this 1 in 50mil number was pretty much made up. Watever method they used to arrive at it cannot possibly be reliable.
How on earth did you check this functionality? Will I be sorry I asked?

Just guessing on this, but I am sure they base this on the average lobster catch in a year vs. how many specimens have this anomaly. With a margin of error of 50 mill, I would guess that they are in the neighborhood.
wow oddball, a half true albino. never thought it could happen. impressive!

Well being a comercial fisherman by trade I can probably shed some light on the numbers...
Each and every comercially caught species of seafood is regulated and must be recorded at delivery. This data is used to chart the amount of catch. and decides and the next seasons quotas.
It prevents overfishing and lessens the ecological impact.
All seafood buyers are subject to audit so their records must be accurate.
During the offload a 100 count is weighed and the weight per lobster is determined.
The catch weight is divided by the avgerage weight per lobster and they can calculate the number of lobsters caught. So it looks like out of 50 million lobsters caught they found 1 that was mutated.

Thanks zennzzo, I had no idea.
Do they check every single lobster though? I mean, woudn't we need to adjust this 1/50mil number for the medium-cooked specimen that slipped unnoticed through this procces and ended up well-done on a plate just like their "rare-born" brothers? Seems unfair to assume that being an illegal immigrant is a privellege reserved to the Human Sapiens species.

I have seen a similar lobster a few years ago with the same color scheme. It was also located in Maine. Have also seen blues ones, orange ones, spotted ones, a white one, etc. These odd colored lobsters show up from time to time. As for the odds of catching one (1 in 50 mill, 1 in 100 mill) these are best guess. Obviously the more bizzare the color or pattern, the more rare the animal is.
The one in Oddball's picture doesn't look half albino as the eye is normal color. That lobster was most likely half normal/half white.
I have also seen a lobster that was half normal color/ half blue that was also a hermaphrodite. It had viable eggs on the female side of the tail. Figure that one out.
Keep in mind that not all lobsters caught make it to market. There is a legal minimum and legal maximum size on lobsters in Maine. Also, egg bearing females and those with notches cut in a specific tail flipper (cut by the fishermen) must be released regardless of size. The one in the article that was just caught appears to be of legal size.
All lobsters are examed on the boat to make sure they are legal to keep. When the lobsters are landed, the only measurement taken is the total weight. Generally they are loaded 90#s in a crate for hard shell and 80#s for soft shell. So the number caught is never calculated. When the article refered to the bi-color specimen as 1 in 50mil, I think it refered to the total population, not just the lobsters that are landed.

Thanks!
I thought so.
They should have said "estimated to be approxmately 1/50mil" or something. I was puzzled at first how they would arrive at this number, because there are cases when pretty exact figures can be determined but I couldn't think of a way for lobsters.
