firemouths, a 6 inch festae, 5inch dovii, and a normal diet of raw shrimp
pellets.... other than that he is growing pretty :swear: fast

think they grow faster than an average rtc or shovelnose

snogard
08-02-2005, 12:08 PM
i have all three (RTC, TSN, TSNxRTC). its all on their diet, like wickedmidas said, will eventually depend on the individual. My RTC and TSN is now a lot bigger than the hybrid. although they all started the same size, same tank. the hybrid is also the aggressor between the three.

I have some sort of RTC hybrid...some sort of pim...i'm thinkin its either a sailfin or some other larger pim....he is growing very fast though!! Faster than most RTC and hybrids. in a little over a month he has grown a little over 4"!! GEEZ!! I don't have horribly good pictures...but i will get some. I even tried slowing him down by feeding every other day just enough to round his belly. He was in a 125 also..but i moved him to the 300gal about 3 days ago. Hes about 7" now. Gonna start to power feed him now! Should take off! :D

rtcxtsn is not a good fishy to go for. scientists stripped down the genes of both fish and merged them. basically it is a clone. do not buy one!!! the longest recorded they have lived is 6months.

Peanut_Power
08-03-2005, 12:27 PM
Well I guess I'm doing good then cuz I've had mine for almost 3 now...:P....but mines not a RTCxTSN hybrid...its RTCxsomething else....and you really believe that they stripped down the genes and cloned it? Seems like too much work and effort...plus the price would be higher. Seems like most of the pims would interbreed if no other same species was available...

reefman

ask your lfs they usually can get them

CentralMayhem
08-06-2005, 2:19 PM
they will grow fast. i had a rtc grow from 2" to 14" in about 8 months. they will grow slower if fed less often, but it always depends on the individual. not every fish from a spawn reaches the same size or grows at the same rate. if all fish are power fed, you will still have some that grow faster than others even if they are fed the same amount of food and kept in ideal conditions. genetics plays a big part. but when your dealing withthese types of cats, you can count on some serious growth no matter what as long as you provide for their needs.

Peanut Power,
Your cat looks like a RTC x P. perruno aka L. marmoratus hybrid. Also, to avoid confusion, there is a genuine species of catfish called a spotted shovelnose, Psuedoplatystoma coruscans. That hybrid thing should not be called a spotted shovelnose...maybe a shovelnose red tail. I sincerely doubt that any of these cats have been cloned. :headshake

redtail hybrids size? it get about at least a foot a year in right conditons (in 6 months for 2-3 inches my redtail was already a foot in 6months) i use to had a RTC for 3 years it was 32inches i have one now that for 25inches almost 2years already.

As for RTC hybrids i have 2 of them for 1week it was 2-3 inches now it is 3-4inches, they dubble their size that quick i feed them gold fish close to their own size that is why they grow so fast.:D

these fish grow fast and they eat a ton. hope you have the budget to feed these suckers cuz they will eat you out of house and home bro. Mine grew to about 17 inches in one year and ate all the other smaller fish so dont mix them with slow growers because sooner or later they will end up lunch.

I'll try to get a pic of mine next to a measuring tape for everyone to see, he is currently around 28 1/2 ->29 inches and still growing. eating about 1-2 lbs. of shrimp per week, plus ocassional white suckers, and cichlid pellets. Might be a day or two though got a lot on my plate right now. Too many hobbies too little time and money lol!

Mine's now 33-34". He regurgitates when you overfeed him. I usually feed him about 2-4 pounds of shrimp and fresh fish per week.

I have always loved the RTC but these hybrids are amazing. So beautiful and stunning!!!

I am realistic and know I could never give one a proper home so I drool over others LOL Unless someday I marry a man that is as much into fish as I am and will turn a basement into a large pond LOL I stick to my smaller pictus cats.

Curiosity here...

Are these hybrids tame like many RTC are known to be? Or are they a bit more aggressive? I am not sure how aggressive tsn are or if they are more aggressive or if they like affection like RTC are known to.

I would really like if any of you with these hybrids could upload some videos to youtube or something. :) It is rare to find vids of them. I would love to see them in action.

my hybrid swims around real slow like with complete confidence. He hasn't eaten the 2 small sunglow cats (yet) and he easily could. I hardly ever see him picking on n e one. (I've seen him hit my tsn every now and then over a hiding spot) Other then that he's really chill but a def glutton!!!

Mine is becoming really aggressive after being alone for several months. I put my planiceps in with him and he ripped half it's tail off. He's claimed the whole pond as his territory. He was fine when he lived with 2 different hybrids, and a huge pleco. They all died due to several crappy moves over a few months, and now he's alone until I get my mega tank built. Mine is really tame and lets me pet him and feed him by hand like a rtc, but every now and then he gets a little spooked like a tsn. I guess it depends on how good of a day he's havin. I would love to put up some vids, but I don't have a video camera so until I can bribe someone that's a no go. lol. I'd love to have a video of me feeding him some huge pompano whole.

my rtc only grew 2-3" in about a month it is fast anyway?

necrocanis
05-31-2007, 7:03 AM
That is normal and maybe just a little fast. Depends on what size it is already. If it is less than 6" that is normal over 10" and doing that much in one month is fast. Go over 20" and you'll be lucky to see an inch per month.

i bought 10 RTC 2 years ago ,they were about 6 inchs long, now the biggest is around 25 inchs .they live in a pond and i dont feed them ,i put some giant gourami and pacu for it.

Wrong!!!! Not a RTC x TSN. This BEAUTIFUL specimen is none other than a red tail catfish crossed with a perruno catfish. Note the spots on dorsal side...not stripes. Also, notice the head. Very round like the RTC. Unlike the shovel nose head of the hybrid that you refer to. This fish is MUCH cooler than a RTC xTSN, often called the "Dorada" catfish in the Amazon as it is tragically and savagely a delicacy for cowards and fools. Take excellent care of him.
