Pretty much the exact opposite of what you said. They grow FAST and can attain sizes larger than either the RTC or TSN due to something called hybrid vigor.
I was looking into one for my 240 gallon, but realized it would outgrow that tank in less than 2 years and need a large pond.

friend has one in a pond that is a little less than 3 years old and its almost 4 feet long. it grew faster than any fish he had ever owned and he's been into large FW fish for probably 10+ years.

The replies will come thick and fast quite a few of us have them on here . my one is growing like a mad thing and eating like one to, they grow just as fast if not faster and I hope you have made plans for him. They will eat any thing thay fits in there mouth. Here are a few pics an early one and a later one he has become very nocturnal and should be going into his pond with my TSN in the next few weeks as all I have to do is pull my finger out and fit the filter and fill it.

this fish gets huge fast. Mine is 28 1/2 inches long and growing at 1+ inches a month still. You can expect that with proper feeding it will probably outgrow most rtcs. Zoo shovelnose catfish patterns change as they grow. they have a less dramatic pattern when younger. you will start to see some white stripes going up through the darker top and his spots will get smaller with age. I can see the difference in the pattern on mine from when i got him just 8 months ago. Seems to me that this catfish does not slow it growth as much as rtcs or tsn when at a larger size. Good luck with yours. I think this catfish combines the beauty of both rtc and tsn.

yeah, I think our kitties are bringing a little respect and more knowledge to the fish keeping community on hybrid fish. I think it's awesome more people are becoming interested in them, I just hope they house them properly!

i was thinking about it and it seems there could be some very interesting hybrids from pimelodidae. How about a lima x tsn, or lima x planiceps, or planiceps x tsn. I wonder if any of those have been tested. Those are just what i think would make interesting hybrids. Maybe a jau x rtc? lol, the possibilities are gargantuan!

so far the largest I have heard of is one of our members has one at 31 inches, and that was 2 months ago so maybe bigger now. I hope someone has one in the 4ft. range that would be awesome.

technically they are not man-made fish. Their chromosomes align properly to allow them to make a viable offspring. They are close enough on the evolutionary scale that their chromosomes still align. Species within the same family or genus can actually breed in the wild and creat natural hybrids. So the notion that they are man-made is up for grabs. Sure we made it more likely to happen, but the tools for it to happen are already there. Strictly a matter of opinions here, but trust me these hybrids do regularly occur in the wild. Fish are the most hybridized animals in the wild due to their breeding habits. This is not just my two cents it is provent fact that is irresputible. So what do you say to all the wild hybrids? If you think that breeding hybrids is playing god then what about breeding anything else? Who is to say that any animals who are the same species would actually breed in the wild? They are reproduced in captivity the same way that we make hybrids. So wouldn't that mean we are also playing god every time we selectivly breed any type of animal? Hybrids occur naturally just like any other animal, and if you say that hybrids are wrong you might as well say that every other animal that breeds in the wild shouldn't exist either! This is not meant to offend anyone either!!!!! Just thought you should know!

Very contriversal debat..
I agree with the above, albeit may hybrids in the wild are sterile and thus limited to their potential population growth.
When it comes to the hobby of fish keeping-It is hard to argue against hybrids such as RTC X TSN. Hybrids in the hobby have no impact on natural populations.
Those against hybrids, must surely second guess themselves when they see the beauty of some of the fish pictured on this thread......

I personally think it is quit fascinating how animals can be closely related enough to reproduce, but yet look so different, and seeing the outcome is like discovering a whole new animal no one has seen before. Can you imagine the looks on the faces of the first person to see a liger? Or a rtc x tsn. They must have been stunned by the beauty of how these creatures looked, both parents included. An interesting hybrid to do a google search one is the leopon. The leopon is a mix between lion and leopard. There are also hybrid caracal x servals called servicals. they are all amazing the cat hybrids really fascinate me and I guess the catfish hybrids do too, lol. Oh and many servicals are found in the wild and so are leopons ocassionally. Ligers are totally man-made, but f ing huge. They actually mate in captivity sometimes. They can get to more than 1200 lbs. Bigger than bears! Mules are also hybrids. they are everywhere, just think all domestic dogs and cats are selectively bred just like when we decide to make hybrids, it's no different except domestic animals can breed, and are very harmfull to the environment when strayed. Please everyone have your pets spayed or nuttered! LOL

i have two hybrids spotted rtc hybrid i believe that they aren't man made because we human don't know when or how they even reproduce?(to get hybrids) no one should mess with nature nor try to pretend to be god for a day.
then we will starting to en up with an epidemic any one does do thing it could mess up the evormental food change. example like a Arapaima:arapaimag and a giant snakehead hybrid!:jaw:
-noboby goes into the water!:D

How much did you get your tsnXrtc's for? They're going for about $40 here and I know of only one store that carries them. And being that they grow faster than their parent species, are they recommended to be kept in the same tank/pond as those?
