Hi,

just bought a couple of fishes recently but i dunno what species is this...i was hoping somebody can recognize and give me more info about the fishes...

the seller only refer them as 'spots' because the body have 4 spots...

i actually have made a thread before buying the fishes but no adequate response since i can't post some pictures in the previous thread...

now i decided to buy them and take the pics...and here they are...

please help me ID them...

Thx in advance...

They are hemichromis fasciatus or fremprongi. I just started a thread the other day in the africa riverine section as these are an african river species. mean as anything at least mine were plan on getting some as soon as I get more space. great pick up. they can definatley live with red devils & any agressive cichlid. no placid tankmates as these are 1 of my 5 most aggressive fish list from all the types I've kept. they get about 8 inches but grow real slow. there is a similar species hemi. elongatus which gets about 10 inches but has more spots on its' body & streamlined.

well i guess mine is Hemichromis elongatus

given that H. fasciatus should have red color in belly section...mine is pure grey w/ silver spot...

looking from picture that i found in sydneycichlid...i guess mine are pair *hopefully

what do u think? are they a pair?

Hmm. . . can't tell for sure from your pictures but I'd say it's likely.

there are 5 spots total starting from just behind the gill plate to the caudal peduncle, and that's why they're called the 5 spot jewels or also the 5 star generals. there are 3 species, Hemichromis elongauts, H. fasciatus and H. frempongi. your fish is definitely one of the 3 and probably they are fasciatus. I believe frempongi is the rarest of the 3. :)

the first set look like what are called H. Fasciatus. As I now seen frempongi & they are darker color then fasciatus & no eye stripe going through the eye ( stops mid stream). The second set is not elongatus. They are also fasciatus just not in breeding color. elongatus has more speckling on the dorsal fins & the caudual fin also 5 spots on the body.

i had two only coz that's the last two fishes in my lfs...

unfortunately the bigger one started to become agressive towards the smaller one so i decided to move the smaller one temporarily until the smaller one heals...

i suppose they're not a 'pair' as i suspected before...

nice elongatus!

defenitvly not fasciatus.how many fish do you have in the tank?

so mine is Elongatus OR Fasciatus? a bit of confusion here...

not that it really matter which one but i just really like to know which species i kept :)

thx
