Would I be able to use a galvenized tub for a pond. Galvenized is the stuff that is sealed correct. If not then is there anything that I can use to seal the metal. I would rather not use a liner because they are ugly. I want this to look really clean. Is there like a paint or something I could use on the metal to keep it from leaking metals into the water if galvenized even does leak metals. Thanks for the help.

Most people that keep fish in galvanized tubs do so with a pond liner between the metal walls and water. Galvanized tanks may have a fine coat of oil as a rust preventative. Also, under aquarium conditions, the metal may leech toxic levels of zinc into the water (may cause lethargy, disorientation, gastroenteritis, demensia, etc.). You may be able to seal it with 2-part marine epoxy (same stuff plywood aquarium builders use).

Ant suggestions on what to paint it with. I wish I could just get one of those plastic ones but I can't fit it into my basement...

Check out the polyethylene bins at aquaticeco.com. They have sizes up to 650gals that'll fit through standard doorways. They'll even install a 24" x 24" lexan window (or 2) so you can see into the bin for a normal aquarium view.

Would a metal primer work? I don't wanna spend $150 on a marine paint. I could do a liner for $40 as a last resort I guess.

Chad55,,

Check out this stuff http://www.sanitred.com/waterproofing/animal_habitat_floors__walls/animal_habitat_floors__walls.html

It should be in your price range for what you want to do.

I've seen Galv. toughs used for fish after they were aged for years without any coatings... so if you want to but it now and wait 4yrs. :grinno:

How about finding one in a horse pasture and trade the owner for a new one. :screwy:

Or just get the stuff above .

Plastic is always the easiest, and I like to go with easiest myself. Make sure to measure twice if you've got any turns in the stairs. Ever get a couch stuck on a stairs? :D

See, now if you had built a boat in your basement first, you'd have experience in moving stuff there (and a big hole in the wall ;) ).

Good Luck, Got my fingers crossed for ya!

Cool,.

If I was closer I'd let you borrow my shovel :D

Send pics of your endever.

Will it (the pont) freeze-up there?

Maybe just need a small de-icer to keep it going year round.

You cant use galvanized without a liner first it will rust second the coating can be toxic( i weld this stuff all the time in my trade) and if you want to paint it you will first have to strip the galvanized coating off. I wouldn't try it. Get some stainless and have someone build you a stainlees steel tub if you want metal

Ok, the galvanizing is there to prevnt rust. Only rusts where you break the surface coating or if it's weathered a long time (same thing).

And there are paint that go directly on galvanizing, plus coatings like sani-tred to seal it.

I've had a 330g (8x2.5x3)galvanized pond for just a little over 4 years with absolutely no problems, I grew out a bunch of cichlids (buttikoferi, midas, jags, severums, rd's trimacs, multiple pacu) with no problems or slow growt or weird behaviors from any of the fish. I also grew out a Leucistic TSN from 10" to over 20" with no problems. I've had clay pots in there from day one and I constantly rearrange them, by cliding them across the bottom and I regularly clean the algae out with a rough sponge and not once has it scratched the tank enough to remove the coating and let it rust.

I just recently sold the cichlids and got some decent large mouth bass (3 18" and 2 22") a big crappie, 2 pacu and a 10" bullhead catfish.

Good luck!

I used an aged galvanized trough several times for grow-out and aged water, but these had been aged outside for several years. These are after all animal watering troughs.

And to coat them you do not strip off the galvanizing you etch it.

How about some pix to show them some healthy fish.

The only fish I still own, and have pictures of is my female midas. I grew her up from 3". She lived in the metal tank from the day I got it for just about 3 years. Now she's a healthy 12" and thick as hell!
