My girlfriend and I bought a orange midas from petsmart. I have done some research on them and have found that this probably isn't a true bred midas. So what is he? Thanks in advance.

It is prob a combo of both fish (rd/midas). You would almost have to go with sombody like Rapps to get a "pure" midas now. I have seen some adult RD/midas purchased from petsmart,very nice color. The local petsmart right now have "midas" cichlids that are sevrum yellow in color. I haven't seen that nice yellow colored ones since I was a kid.
up here the petsmarts changed over from selling 'midas' to 'red devils' several months ago. got mine last sept. he's pushing 9". his face and lips hold more a "u" midas appearance than the "v" look of the rd, so even though i know he's a big mutt i still refer to him as a midas. nice pickup fnj!

i just got a job at my local petsmart and its not a midas at all its a red devil although they say its a midas on the label.
That is a pretty fish. Mine is the same color. How aggressive is yours? I think mine will be very aggressive. Mine is about 2 inches. He was the most dominant at petsmart. He is in a tank with my texas which is about 4 inches. The midas doesn't take anycrap from him. I think i will have to divide them up when the midas gets bigger.
well he lets me pet him during feeding. other than that he's trying to destroy my arm if it's in the tank and he thinks he owns the foot or so in front of the tank if i start gawking at him too long.
good chance he'll wind up solo depending on tank size. good chance he'll punish the tank too. mines already busted a glass top and i had to replace a glass heater after hearing him box it for a few nights. puppy chew toys and a stealth heater have helped.

The biggest difference between midas and red devils is body shape. Red devils have a long slender body with larger lips and midas are normally short and thick. Pure midas will always have a blunt face and comparision with red devil. Honest if you have ever seen a pure red devil you would know.
Although it is unlikely you got a pure midas or red devil from petsmart. It is possible. I lucked up in got a pair of midas a few years ago.
