Well friends I live in the wonderfull state of Michigan and you know the great lakes so if you love water and fishing and all that good stuff you'll love it hear... (and if you dont mind a little snow) well anyways going fishing in the great lakes is fun you can catch bass, catfish, bluegill and SNAKE HEADS>>> :22_yikes: I dont know if any of you outside Michigan people know that snake heads are Illegal in Michigan... I guess, and this is just a guess that snake heads can adapt to our cold weather and can live in our cold water... I only know this because fishermen have been catching snake heads in Lake Erie for years but any how I love snake heads but they dont sell in Michigan anymore because of this...
Dont take this the wrong way I dont want any right now but I think it is stupid to make them illegal, but just my opinion.... What do you guys think!!! And are they Illegal in your state too?... :feedback:

They are now illegal to sell, posess, and transport across state lines in the whole USA
Only ones you can keep are the ones that were already your pets before they set the ban and given that before the nationwide ban they were legal in that state.

Yeah, they are pretty much freakin illegal in all the USA...i think Maryland is about the only state that can sell them (dwarf tropical species only), and thats just within the state...like you have to live and keep it in Maryland. Sucks....but why the heck is this in the cichlids? Please do fill me in....

From what I've been told, snakeheads get HUGE in the wild and since they can walk and breathe out of the water, and have no living known predators, it makes them very dangerous to our native fish... Here's a news article I just pulled off Google, hopefully it explains a little more...

Wheres the Federal law that makes Snakeheads illegal across the entire country?
the only Federal law I know of makes it illegal to import into the country or across
state lines
SUMMARY: The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service adds all species of
snakehead fishes in the Channidae family to the list of injurious fish,
mollusks, and crustaceans. By this action, the Service prohibits the
importation into or transportation between the continental United
States, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, the Commonwealth of Puerto
Rico, or any territory or possession of the United States. The best
available information indicates that this action is necessary to
protect wildlife and wildlife resources from the purposeful or
accidental introduction and subsequent establishment of snakehead
populations in ecosystems of the United States. Live snakehead fishes
or viable eggs can be imported only by permit for scientific, medical,
educational, or zoological purposes, or without a permit by Federal
agencies solely for their own use; permits will also be required for
the interstate transportation of live snakeheads or viable eggs
currently held in the United States, for scientific, medical,
educational, or zoological purposes. This final rule becomes effective
immediately upon publication.
LIL blonde girl summary of the above :Federal law only prohibits importation Into the United states,The district of Columbia and the commonwealth of puerto rico and transportation across state lines. Therefore If i live in a state ie. WI and there are no local ordinances against posession its legal for me to keep snakeheads as long as I purchase them localy ie within the state borders-Anne
Stupid law, the most invasive and destructive fish in the country is already everywhere, the common bluegill.
Definitley. And largemouth bass. They are HIGHLY invasive. As far as I know, they are not illegal nation-wide... they are legal in VERY few states though. And interstate transportation of them is illegal, as Anne said. And they do have natural predators, and even predators here. Don't get me wrong, it's very bad that they're running around in US waters, as it is with many other invasive species... but, it's insanity to outlaw them because some are loose in rivers. LMB and bluegill aren't outlawed in a lot of states, but they're still all over where they aren't native.

lol... yep. We have a lot of invasive natives, and they've been introduced into states and areas that they don't belong.

Breed a snakehead adjusted to eat fire ants or killer bees or german cockroaches and they may drop the snakehead ban.

and gambusia affinis!
The gambies have driven out a lot of native top minnows and a few killies but at least make good forage. I'm not saying we should cross-spread species, I'm just saying bans should be based on real science, not sound bites.
