how about a pair of salvinis or some firemouths?
Discus would work and look nice as well.

Go with some of the smaller geos like the red head tapajos. Or one fish that I really like that is really underated it the firemouth. If you can find a nice strain with a good red color they are quite spectacular.

I like firemouths, how many would you suggest putting in the tank with the eel?

I also like geos, they had some at petco a few days ago...

Any other suggestions? Are there any catfish that would do well in my tank?

The eel will be fine with anything that isn't aggressive, as they are very passive. Puffers would be out of the question, but clown loaches would be a good match and as long as the fish can't fit in the eel's mouth it'll be left alone.

Clown loaches need to be kept in groups of atleast 6, and a tank of atleast 100-gallons :).

Never buy from chains. Dumb employees, bad fish, poor managment .

I know but that is the only place Ive seen them.

I saw a few other fish i liked at my LFS:

Tinfoil barbs, little bichers, clown knives, ghost knives, convicts, Prochilodus, Leporinus, gold severums, and some pictus cats. would any of those do well with my eel?

Maybe, since they grow to around the same size.

The clown knife gets way to big- 3+, and is real mean.

I'd really recommend a Ctenopoma Acutirostre or Ansorgii, they are pretty passive and would get along with the Fire Eel. Same for a species of Nandus.

those are some neat fish, they have one at my LFS for $30.00. Is that a good price?

oh and would a frontosa do well with my eel? Think i could mix one with the CA/SA cichlids? sorry for all the questions, just trying to figure out what i want with my eel :D

It really depends on how large it is. If it's only 1" or 1.5" I'd say no, but over 2.5" yes.

I have a beautiful 14" clown knife in my 75 gal. purchased him around 3-4" not aggresive at all... feed him silversides, earth worms, shrimp stuff like that, never live food he is completley hand fed, I have two Dwarf Gouramis, he could swallow them both whole at the same time but he never bothers them. As far as cool cats look into a four-line which I also have in my 75 gal. or maybe a lima shovel nose. Both cats if raised correct will stay completley friendly and not grow to large for your tank.
