As you all know, aros are great jumpers and great escape artists. So as a precaution, aro owners must make sure that their tank lids are tight and aro proof.
SO heres the question: What do you do or use to keep the tank aro proof??
Ill start... I put half gallon milk containers filled with water on my lid so that its nice and heavy ( graduated from chinese take out tupperware). I also ductape the small holes and spaces in the back and i put plastic plants on parts of the glass lid to make the arowana feel more secure.

Yeah, mine is a little skittish yet. It only jumps if I dont leave a light on at night. I use a little candle type christmas light to keep it happy. anyone else do this?

theres alot of anti-mammalian-diet people out there, who claim that mammalian fats are not properly digested by fish and can be harmful long-term.. but I've yet to see any serious proof of it. That doesn't make it an invalid argument in my book though; it does sound reasonable to me.

What helps my tank is that its acrylic :)
Other then that I have 2 acrylic sheets covering my two openings then a heavy dual fluorescent light on top. For the small opening on the back for filtration, I just used a water bottle fill with water.

Im pretty lucky that my leichardti is really mellow. I still dont like to take chances though so I also have sand bags weighing down my lids. I always keep my aro fed really well as I find when they are hungry they like to jump around a lot :shakehead

Most of what I have heard about difficulty digesting mammalian meat pertains to Cichs (like especially africans) and Is mostly if their diet consists completely of meat. I haven't really heard of aros having trouble with it. As long as you feed it (mammal meat - yum) in moderation I wouldn't think that it would hurt them.
Also speaking of arro weight... I have heard of an adult aro knocking off a tank top even when it is weighed down with bricks, or milk jugs full of water, or even jars full of change (I bet that was a mess). the only sure-fire way I have found is to use those really cheap c-clamps. A lot of people are against this due to the extra time it adds to tank maintenance... but if you lose even one aro it sux.

luckily my silver aro has never tried to jump out. but just in case i have glass tops with 6- 30" strip lights holding them down. I learned the hard way when my 1st one jumped out of a 2'' square hole the 1st nite I had him.

My aro used to jump/splash a lot at night, so one night I turned all the lights off and sat watching the tank for ages in the dark (could just make out the shilouets of the fish). After a while I noticed my 10" redspot plec swim up to the top of a 2' deep tank and start chasing around my [then] 16" black aro!!! Needles to say the plec went into the lfs the next day....

[COLOR=YellowGreen]my silver is about 12 inches and he is quite calm. He does not get spooked easily. It's strange that mine has grown out of his fear of people. But whenever he sees someone , he looks foward to getting a snack. He likes shrimp, sardines and lizards. Especially shrimp!

in the wild, Arowanas jump meters to grab food insects or birds. Therefore a solid and heavy cover can save the fish.
A piece of glass with ventilation holes drilled will be another good choice of cover for arowana. But of course, the weight must be able to withstand the arowana from jumnping out.

Sounds good koji . But my cover is homemade glass, about 1/4 inch thick, and my large aro jumped through it. I was pretty sure back then it was aro proof..
BTW>. Welcome to MFK!

Hi RTF,
Very nice site you have here. I decided to join, hope you don't mind. :)

i just use mosquito netting for mine... secured by clips.
If your aro is stable there shouldnt be any problems with jumping.
my aros are 18"++ so no holes big enough for them to jump out. Have glass lids with light box ontop therefore they need to knock over lights and lid at same time...they are use to people so no real jumping

Welcome to the site. Its not mine but all are welcome to join!
IoStrisciare - a guy on another board jump through a small gap on the net and
fell on the net itself. Found the arowana stiff .=( But as long as the clip is secure and there are no holes then all should be good.
Koji - yeah but a calm arowana can get startled too sometimes. Dont wanna take risks..
Chen - sounds good. I have a heavy double strip light on my tank too but the front lid is loose so i use weight to make it more secure.
Heard lot of aro death due to jumping out of the tank. But what is a real cause?Aro don't jump for nothing.I get to know of a guy who never cover the tank at all.

I use a single big piece of netting to avoid gaps. It also provides better ventilation for the tank i find.

they can jump from being startled, sick, stressed or even during feeding.
You can don't cover the tank, but its a big risk.
And well... most importantly, it depends on your aro's character.

arrows jump as part of natural feeding behavior in the wild, i hear.

yea.... but that depends on the character of the aro....
my red one loves to jump for frogs that manage to climb up the sides of the tank... whereas my gold one just looks at them and hopes for them to drop in... :hitting:

maybe he's just too fat to jump.... i dunno....
it depends on their character.... thats the other point that make these fish so interesting...
Some are real gluttons while others are retiring and some others playful... kinda cute...

My silver is pretty mellow, it really dosent jump but hits it's krill real hard though...WHAM...wouldn't want to get any of my digits (fingers) involved in that...ouchie!!
on my tank i have perspex covers plus my tank hood is very heavy with loc into place hinges so no probs with jumping when i had my green.
