View Full Version : Ram's and Frontosa Breeding
I ve had many ram's and for some reason I just love them. I also love my Front's. I would like to start breeding them, I heard for Ram's the right condition's would be a 20 gallon tank, about 10 Ram's the water temp should be 78-80 deg. , and it's best to use a red light instead of a normal one?? Does anyone know if that is correct? I dont want to screw up. Also I have no idea what the conditions are for Front's, I read it online but I would like to get some opinions also. The only thing I was told is to buy 6 of them and that is your best shot.?? Any suggestions?

i've never heard of anyone using colored lighting for anything other than aesthetic appeal.
get 5-6 rams, and let a pair form of from there. once the pair forms, the rest of the rams will be bullied mercilessly, so its best t remove them. there's no telling on when the pair may decide to lay eggs; could be the same day, could be 3 months down the road.
That helps, I thought the red lighting was a little weird, thanks for the tip.

frontosa fish takes alittle more time, unless you already have determine their sex and age(at least 3-5 years old) before you will even get anything. but like the rams they will pair up first and its best that they pair up 3 females to 1 male. you will need about 100+ gallon tank. the will breed in a 75 but it will take longer. also low lighting and ph plus hard water will triger it. and dont forget to place a flat rock in an open area for them to spawn. i watched mine spawn two nights in a row. it really neat to watsh this "dance". in about 1 hours time she laid 12 eggs. the next night 8 more then thats it.
I bet that's pretty neat to watch. I am working on getting a bigger tank now. I know where I can get a few good frontosa but they wont be more then a year n a half old, but I am a patient person I can wait. Thanks for the advice I'll make sure I get a tank 100-125gallons and watch my water quality. I do that anyways. =)

i had 5 bolvian rams in a 20 gal and had a pair that bred, really cool fish. I didnt even notice when they laid the eggs. I woke up one morning and noticed that the rams were fighting off the killifish and thought that was kind of weird. Sure enough the killifish was going after the fry and the rams were desperately trying to get the killifish. I had them in a tank with some plants, lots of rocks and cave like structures, and water temp around 77 i think. It took prob around 4-5 months for them to pair up and breed.
