I haven't done this one, but I always thought about using these rubbermaid tray things.

This one will do ya. you can modify it to fit your needs.

Any cheaper and you'd have to steal it.

For $15 ea you can use commercial floor scrubber pads (course and finer (polishing ) pads) for first 2 layers and then pot scrubbers for the W/D.

So simple it almost hurts.

Not too much of a smell. Your going to have an ammonia spike when the tank cycles.

Don't want your filter going anaerobic on you.

What's your water chemistry like?

Got any pics of your set-up?

well a few updates ...

i set the system up using one of those 3 drawer rubbermaid stackers .

1st box has a prefilter pad and thin netting material to trap the bigger debris.

2nd a s load of scrubbies for the bactirial colonies.

3rd the pump to send back the water to the tank.

not sure what the water parameters are at the momment as i dont have a kit at the momment.plus a friend has given us a few fish as his tank was punched in 2 days a go so he needed so i have added the following and yea i know the filter wasnt set up yet but i have to make due.

just added
13 inch long tire track eel
4 inch oscar
9 inch koi (yea i know the tank is cramped for it this is just a temp cage for it)
a few feeders still alive .

the water is getting cloudy and has a slight smell , any recomendations??

How long is temporary?

Water changes! 25% per day with treated water and aged if possible. Get one of the bacteria-in-a-bottle additives to boost your filter cause of the bio-load and w/c's.

Stop filter and add to top drawer and restart after ten minutes.

If your not aerating the tank, do so...it helps with the off-gassing and some oxygen transfer. Or atleast put it in the sump (bottom drawer). Tank is better tho for this circumstance. When company goes home you can put it in the sump.

would it be ok to rinse the mechanical filter part in the tap once a week?

Do not rinse the mechanical filter with tap water. Use the old water from your water changes to rinse the filter.
