Closest place to get SH to WA state is in B.C. but you would need to find someone foolish enough to bring them accross the border. I would not reccomend trying it. martinsane if I come accross any SH I will let you know. What kind you looking for anyway?

I'm working with Gachua but I would think that most sh would breed under the
same conditions.

Nice pic, I didn't say all sh breed the same...duh.. read my post..Just one would think they would breed under the same conditions. You know "breeding the water", to trigger the spawn.

Breeding large sh`s will be almost impossible , unless you have your own secluded pond , the large ones dont get along too well when confined in a small tank they need lots of room and water to find thier perfect match !

Do you think duplicating a small rice paddy would work? I have heard it works for a lot of loaches and spiney eels. Works like crazy for glass shrimp, geishagirls, zebra dianos, and weatherfish. You might even get rice.

Monster Voodoo Fish,

I did read your post, “breeding the water”, to trigger the spawn? … can you please explain a little bit more in detail… You said are working with Gachua, so I assume that you have successfully bred them then, correct? Have you experienced w/ other species? If you have so, please go on…

Normally, one (a Channa keeper) would think that vegetation would be a MUST for a successful spawning… but I believe this is not always true, not for all Channa species anyways…

Habitat preferences also can vary by species… some spawn in rivers & streams, others in swamps, ponds, and rice fields.

Spawning seasons also vary by species… several spawnings occur in the summertime, and some spawn throughout the year. Some species can spawn up to 2, 3 times, or even more. Some species are mouthbrooders, and some others are not.

PH range can also vary, as well… Gachua are quite tolerant to a wide pH range (4.25-9.4?)… because of this, it makes them to be one of the top most hardy SH species.… Duh.. Channa gachua do happen to be the most common, most available, and most easiest species to breed for a reason??

Anyways, I know I did start this thread awhile back sometime ago, and want to apoligize for not returning and/or posting back sooner. I will make sure that I do visit/check this thread more often in the future. :headbang2

I'm on the second spawn, my male still needs to learn to hold the eggs right , should be soon. They are still young but very large for gachua 10-11".

To breed your water I use Black water expert made by Kent. I just turn my heater
off, to get the water through a cold period.

For the big SH's I have no idea what would trigger a spawn but I would try
the temp change, water level drop and peat(BWE).

I have breed my gachuas for the roughly past 3 years and most of the gachuas on here have come from my breeders !
here is what I do !

pretty much nothing

j/k I have my breeders in a 30 long and a 55 long

1 cave
1 nice piece of wood
1 big piece of slate
4-5 fake plants

I have used bleck water expert and I highly reccommend it ,but its not totally necessary !
you also need to put the breeding tank out of the way , if you have kids walking around and sticking thier nose up to the tanks all the time nothing will happen !
for gachuas its just not that hard to do ! other channa might be a little different
