It doesn't at all, because it has a red tail ;)

It's a tatu.

it does, but so does this one. And it IS an armatus. If it is a redtail, it has very nice color. I have't seen a redtail with gold like that on the gillplates. Normally the whole body is gold and it doesn't stand out as much as the gold on this one's gill cover.

Sorry for using our pic dom. Hope you don't mind.

Actually you have a point there, it does have that big fat tail, and gold on the gill plate.

I've never seen an armatus with a red tail, but that armatus above, though a fuzzy/blurry shot, does look to have a kind of red tail.

How could you tell KRSwop1? Is it because it has the gold bling on the scales as opposed to a bronze tint which the tatu have. I am getting pretty confused here. Let me in on the secret bro.:D

I will try to get pics of my red tail tonight for comparison.

I'm no payara ID pro either, but I noticed that the angle on the mouths of armatus don't seem to be as steep as the redtail. I know it's hard to explain, but if you look at some profile shots of both, you'll notice that armatus' heads seem to be more streamline with their bodies. Redtails' heads tilt up more. Armatus have a thicker jaw structure, and one of the most telling traits is the white edge on their tail. But sometimes if the fish is in bad shape, like the wierd redtail that I have, the edge of the tail can be a little thrashed so it's hard to use that to ID.

The tail on armatus is bronze but not red .also the shape is mor compact in armatus

Me too! Anyways, it's a nice looking payara. I'd love one of those in my tank any day. How has it been eating? Have you had any success getting it off live food?

I think you have an Armatus..just my opinion. Many of the Armatus pix's I've seen I notice the Tails has a point < in the middle where the Redtails just fan out.

Awsome.... just getting into Payaras myself.

Here's your fish to get an idea what I'm talking about. Now look at all the Armatus pix's you can find on the web and compare.

no, my redtails have a point in their tails too. I think it's just a maturity thing. I think it's just a really nice redtail, as neet said.

Yeah, I'll try to post some pics this weekend. The pics I do have are before I got the new light on the tank, so they aren't the clearest. I'll see what I can do. They're about 6 inches or so.
