Nice! No monos?

When I started the tank I had 4 monos. They died out and since the scats and the other fish grew so large, I never added more. I feel I owe them a larger tank now. These are some of the most active fish I've seen outside of my african cichlid tank.

Concerning the diameter of the eel. I have (had) three. The smallest is about as wide as, hmm... a nickle and the largest about a 50 cent piece. One recently died, and I found she was loaded with eggs.

I need to build a proper cave for the eels. In the first picture you can actually see one of the larger eels squeezing out of the plastic root. They eat 2 inch crayfish and goldfish up to 2 inches as well.

I am jealous. I hope mine turns out like yours! Nice scats and sharks. The eel is awesome, I think I may get one once my new hood is finished.

The funny thing is, whiles eels have a notorious rep for being escape artist, mine have never tried. And I have open slots on the backs of my hoods where hang-on filters used to reside. So maybe they only try to escape when the water conditions are not pleasing. Who knows.

I like your tank! I hope my scats get that big too! I have 5 scats...2 silver, 2 green, and 1 ruby. I also have 2 Argentinus Monos as well....and 2 orange chromides, and a Knight Goby. Mine are all just little fellas....but have grown since I have set up the tank....They are all reaching the 4" mark now.

They are 3 years old. I set this tank up 3 years ago and these are the survivors. (I had monos and some puffers that didn't make it through the journey.) Shall we have a moment of silence for them....

Thanks.

Looks like you have 4 catsharks in the pics.Did you recently loose one? What are the demensions of your tank if you don't mind me asking as I am trying to guess on the size of those fish.
I love the tank by the way.I have a school of catsharks in my 135 nad looking to add some scats soon. How is the personality of the eels?Do they take nips out of your other fish?
Oh yeah, for got to ask what salinity are you keeping the tank at?

Sorry, been away for a bit. The size of the tank is 72"X13"X18". It is considered an 80gallon-long. During that picture I did have all 4 sharks, they were about 11-13". At that size I could easily tell the difference between the female and male cats.

The eels are "smart" fish. They learn their environment quickly and their tank mates. They do NOT take bites out of fish too large to consume, they are not nibblers. The gobble their food whole, think of a snake that will also crush it's food while it's going down.

I keep the salinity HIGH for a brackish tank, but they seem to appreciate it when it's on the highers spectrum. The max I have gone is 1.020, but usually keep it at 1.016. All of the fish were hardy too! If they were ill, I'd do a water change and would drop the salinity in a few hours time and they'd do well!

But alas, they all died! I recently tried to breed the eels, since I had a minor success story. So I purchased about 5. Well, one of the eels apparently died in one of the ornaments. I only noticed cloudy water and distressed fish on a Thursday before I had to leave out of town. So I did a water change, boosted the salinity and increased the O2, only to come back on Monday to find ALL dead fish!

My 125g brackish currently houses some of these fish. I got a columbian shark, and a scat but there both no where near the size of these guys. Also 5 mono's, 2 chromides, a figure 8 and an archer.. but my salinity is currently at low to 0. I've been adding 1tsp per gallon. How many tsp's per gallon are you adding to reach your desired salinity levels?

hehe, tsp/gallon? No idea. I'd buy the bucket of Instant Ocean and after a water change I'd take 5-10 gallons out at a time and saturate the older water with the salt mix and would add that to the tank. I repeated the process until I got the desired saline level which could be as low as 1.012 and as high as 1.020.

The wonderful thing about brackish fish is that they are HARDY! Think about it, during a 24 hour period, these fish can go from fresh to full sea strength according to the tide schedule. So I developed a water change system for them that would introduce FW while I'd simutaneosly remove the old water and clean the gravel. The fish would LOVE it! You could see them swim in the new water.

Then when I added the salt to the tank, they would have a similar reaction. The sharks would actually drink/swallow the saltier water... interesting.

You will definately want to raise your salt lvl for the Scats. Mine were much more prone to diseases when the levels were low, but after 1.015, they were extremely healthy. They have small gills compared to their size and they "breath" heavy in relation to the other fish. And so I could gage the quality of the water and the oxygen lvl, just by looking at how hard or fast they were "breathing". (The same with eels.)

Great tank! I've got a 75g brackish tank with 3 mono sebaes and a green spotted puffer. I got them tiny, and from freshwater, and have slowly raised the salinity. I'm up to an SG of 1.006 now. When I do water changes now, I add full strength sea water (still goes up very slowly with lots of small water changes), and I've seen a similar reaction with my fish. They LOVE the saltier water. They love to swim right under where I'm pouring it in.

Damn! that blows!.You had a sweet setup going there. Are you planning to rebuild or go with something different?

Sorry to hear that Tanyoberu, I hope you can rebuild. It is always nice to see them grow up but stinks to lose them when they are big. :(

Definately going to rebuild. I enjoyed their activity from small fry to adulthood. I am looking for combinations though. In my lfs, they acclimated some of the sharks and scats to full SW and they are very small. I'm considering going into a SW set up, while keeping some of the brackish species.

I have also been reading on the Fugu puffer. I'd love to have a large puffer in the tank that will help demolish crayfish with the eels. So I'm looking at a future set-up that will have Ruby Scats (green are ok, but I like the look of the ruby better), a fugu puffer and some eels.

History has shown me that the catfish are apparently tasty to fish that bite. I had some bronze puffers in with the columbian sharks and they'd only bite the sharks and would leave the other fish alone. So if I'm to have a puffer, I'd only put it in with "distasteful" fish. And ultimately, the ONE fish I want to get my hands on is the New Gunea Tiger fish (Datnoid).

If I could get those fish, I'd be a happy camper.

I feel sooo good! After a horrible loss, I abandoned this tank. But we can rebuild! We can make it better! We will add SAND, we will try mangrove plants! We will keep Datnoids, Scats, and Eels!

We will keep you posted!

COMING TO a POST NEAR YOU 2008!!!
