I am curious whether or not the filter alone would be enough for the bioload for a 55 gallon tank holding an oscar and a pleco.

Thats fine but take the advice they offer you:

Tips from our Techs
BIO-Wheels spin fast and steady when they first start up, but will slow and "stumble" as bacteria builds. If your BIO-Wheel stops completely, put some aquarium water in a container, swish BIO-Wheel gently, and place back in filter. During filter maintenance, float BIO-Wheels in your aquarium to keep from drying out.

Another intreting fact is Hole in the Head is less common on Bio Wheel filters so for your one O it should be fine untill he requires a bigger tank.;)

A 55 gallon tank is not large enough if it is 12 inches or less in width and as it said copes with up to 100 gallons that should be fine as you know they are messy eaters.

You will find thhe magnum canister part is the week link with your Oscar. As Stotty mentioned they are messy eaters and your filter element will clog quickly.
I recommend an emperor 400 with dual biowheels and a good canister like a Filstar XP3
