I have a 180 gallon set up and am interested in making it a native tank. I live in Michigan and my Dad is always fishing so I have access to these fish. I am thinking Sunfish, Bluegill type fish. I would really like a catfish, and was at a lfs today and they had a nice Blue Channel Catfish, which the label said grew to 27"max, I came home to research the cat before buying and now I'm reading they get bigger than that?? What catfish could I put in a native 180 that wouldn't outgrow it???

If you want something different and still a US native, not local to Mi., look in the reptile, amph. forum at the thread CONGO EELS, a nice monster that would fit your tank and not eat adult bluegill for cheap $12.

you could get bullhead catfish, won't eat larger bluegill and could possibly live in there for life

I agree, a bullhead would work. Channel cats get WAY too big to live in a 180 for life, and it might predate your other fish once it gets very large.
