ok for once this is actually a dumb question

of course!!!

however he must be feeding off something, it would be impossible for him to continue if he isnt eating nothing

what else is in this tank?

what they eating?

While several species of plecostomus do survive on eating algae, it is generally not enough for them to live healthy on. You definitely need to be feeding him many different foods from veggies and fruits to meats, shrimp especially, frozen foods, brine shrimp, bloodworms etc. flake foods especially spirulina for many species of pleco, sinking carnivore pellets, shrimp pellets. and algae wafers, at least that will ensure that he is getting enough to eat. If you want more specifics use the search tool for recommendations on foods to offer your plec. I am assuming that it is a common pleco or a BN.

Very few species of loricariids actually eat algae exclusively. Several are carnivores, many need wood in their diets. Common misconception is that they only eat algae that grows in the tank. There is SO much more involvement with owning plecos. My plecos diet is actually more varied than my arowanas, and they get a lot of variety.

plecostomus doesnt eat exclusively algae. there are a few specialised algae eating plecos, like chaetostoma sp, but even then, it isn't exclusive. can you tell us what pleco you have, a pic would be best if your not sure. then it is easier to deduce what kind of diet your pleco should be getting, and it differs from species to species. cant think of many pets you dont need to feed...

If you don't feed them they will eat a hole in the glass, or so I have been told.
