they are a real easy to keep species, ive got a couple myself. If you want to sex it easiest way is by looking at the genital papilla, the males protrudes, females doesnt. The pH wyldfya has noted is fine, but can go above it to 8, and i wouldnt go lower than 6.5, which is what i keep all plecos at- slightly acidic is best. Obviously a pleco, needs reasonable filtration as they are poop machines. they need hideouts, and bogwood is usually best, as it is also part of their diet. They are an omnivore, but predominantly feed on veggies, as they need a lot of roughage to keep their bowels working. feed it cucumber or zucchini is the norm, or potatoes, shelled peas, broccoli, etc etc etc. i would def. give them some protien for a balanced diet, such as bloodworms or shrimp. it helps with their colours too, mine love bloodworm, and their colouring is great. i think they look their best on light substrates. here some pics of adult, sub-adult and juvenile, both albino and not.

A lfs has them for $6.00 around here. How fast do these things grow? seems to be 1/3 the rate of my commons.

IME they grow pretty fast, not as fast as several of the species of commons, but those you could almost watch them grow in front of you.
