It's a juvenile Florida (lepisosteus platyrhincus) and a nice one at that.
(I'm assuming this was caught in Flordia??? was it??)
The dark stripe down the back is a rather common trait of young gars it is usually most pronounced in the Flordia and spotted gars. It's unfortunate but as time goes on and the fish grows this will break up and begin to turn into that familiar spotted pattern.

I caught the gar in the 16 inch by 16 inch dip net that I use for collecting feeders for my Peacock Bass.
The net is shown with a PB I caught this morning while taking a break from collecting feeders in a back yard lake.:)
Basically, I just use the net to comb grassy areas in the lake. I collect mostly gambusias, grass shrimp, Tilapia, and Mayan cichlid fries. Occasionally Gars, catfish, and lobsters shows up in the mix.

how did you manage to catch it ?
both of the gars were hooked to floating bottels with meathooks, so just picked up the floating bottles and slowly pulled them in, the 8ft one was real tired but heavy as hell to pull straight out of the water but was able to take the hook out and released him back into the water, felt like steve erwin or bill dance letting that thing go. the funny part is that is supposedly one of the teenagers because they say they have 12+ft's in the canals.

Alligator gars should not be killed. There are plenty of food fish out there. That's a great Florida you have there!
