Can anyone give me some background info on their diet and behavior? Are they generally hardy and swim out in the open or are they always hiding? Do they eat pellets?

I got mine at a pretty large size so I have no experience with small ones. Saying that mine is always swimming about, not jumpy especially for a characin, they love algea wafers, spinach, and other greens and will do an AWESOME job ridding your tank of algea but their diet must be supplemented cause Im sure the algea cant grow fast enough. Mine has also mouthed and chewed shrimp and squid pieced but has yet to swallow it. Becaure because they can suck slime off of slower fish!

ALOT of people keep these with aros. Its the phoenix and the dragon. Just keep an eye out as some have a preference for slime coat, but others could care less.

if they dont constantly have a food source they will tend to tevelop an addictive likeing to slime coats. i had one kill an acestro, not the typical "slow fish" you hear about them harassing. watch them close.

I have heard that they do infact like veggies but what kinds besides spinach??? This may be a stupid question but there was a recall on spinach due to the E. coli bacteria; found in it; well till now I am reluctant to eat this stuff and I dont think I wanna give the same thing to my fish. what else is there. Some1 said cucumbers is this okay

i have a 9incher(they get around 12 inches) in with an oscar, GT, texas,Bronze puffer, and salvini. They arent shy. They need open swimming space. They can be skittish when cleaning and will bang into the glass when frightened. Its a robust fish and will even pick on more timid fish like knife fish. i wouldnt worry about putting it in with an arowana as long as it is smaller then it. They wont pick on any fish bigger then they are, and i can definitely say they wont mess most cichlids, at least from my experiences.

i agree with what everyone else has said as well...oh, and i also feed mine frozen krill every once in awhile it really helps with the color.

hope this helps
