I'm surprised the hippos didn't kill the croc. There's a video somewhere of a hippo and croc fighting. I'll have to look for it.

Probably had a maternal instinct kick in and responded like it would if it where its calf.
Crocs and Hippos usually leave each other alone. Crocs know the Hippos could bite them in half in a second.
I saw a show on National Geographic where a Lioness adopted a baby impalla and treated it like its own baby for like a MONTH or something.
The Lioness was starving too. She never ended up eating it, but it was killed by another Lion instead.

That hippo must have an old soul. They are quite treacherous animals normally. They kill more people than any other animal. Crocs wont mess with them.
