Looks like a warmouth (Lepomis gulosus) to me. Did you keep it?

If the ID was questionable an easy way to ID them when they are that size is the a tooth patch on the tounge.

Warmouth stay pretty small right? Like under 10"? If they are calm maybe I could throw one in with my pickerel in the 55 next year. I think that would be a sweet combo.

I will be making an attempt at that combo soon so I will let you know how it goes.

Good deal! BTW skipjack is sending me another pickerel. A grass this time but not much difference. What size tank are you using for this combo?

I think they get to around a foot and all the one I have kept have been pretty laid back. With any lepomis the temperament seems to vary from fish to fish.

My warmouth is pretty laid back. He is currently in a 75G with a yellow perch. Once the pickerel is big enough he will put in the same tank.

That sounds awsome. How big is he(warmouth)? Hopefully I can get my hands on a warmouth when my pickerel gets some size to him. I don't want a repeat of last time!

Bluegill is actually a species, not a type of fish. Nice fish!

I would say Lepomis macrochirus, the bluegill, is the largest Lepomis.

I think that fish was collected in Florida, and warmouth also have the stripes on their head.

Both the smallmouth bass and warmouth are members of Centrarchidae, the sunfish family.

Personally, I would sooner feed an arowana to a warmouth.

There is no panfish family, it's just a term fishermen throw around to describe fish that fit in a pan. Bullhead, yellow perch, sunfish, white perch...all considered panfish.
Bullhead= Ictaluridae
Yellow Perch= Perchidae
Sunfish= Centrarchidae
White Perch= Moronidae

Hey Sandtiger
I'm sure it was just a mis-type, but it's Percidae rather than Perchidae.

HaHa, thanks for pointing that out. Yeah, it was just a mis-type. I know it's Percidae.
