I've been getting more interested in Clown Loaches lately. I was at a lfs when I REALLY wanted to get some. Then my common sense kicked in...I need research! Exactly what size does a Clown Loach get and how fast do they grow?

7" is a nice sized one. They also like being in groups, I would suggest getting at least 2.

They get to be around 12" but they it takes years to get to that size. They like to be in groups so get at least three or more.
Clowns grow to 12" over several years. I have found they are best kept in groups of 5 or more. They are very susceptible to ick, so maintain a higher temp. They eat from the bottom, and are a great cleanup crew, but also will accept flakes at the surface.
Good Luck!

I bought 5 from my lfs that were 1 inch and they are over 3 inches and it has been about a year since I bought them.... Feed any fish well and they will thrive!

You got that right...
Another thing you should probably know is that they have spines near their gills. If a fish ever tried to eat a CL they would be in trouble.

I'll second that. One of my pbass tried to eat an equal sized clown loach and choked on it all night. He finally got it back out, but (to be honest), I was betting against him. If you are up for growing out some though, they have wonderful personalities and will be very rewarding.... provided they wont get eaten. I don't think I will ever have a tank without them again.

no way dude
if a clown loach is eaten its eaten, botom line
the spines are for defense, but they dont prevent the fish from being eaten, its not the same as if a pleco was eaten.
anything predatory will eat a CL without addverse affect

They have spines for defense but anything predatory will eat a clown loach without adverse affect? So what do they use them as defense against? Non Predatory fish?
Clown loaches are awesome they do get huge and like everyone stated grow painfully slow. They do seem to enjoy each others company and should be kept in groups. I have some coming to me this weekend.:naughty:

So how long would a group of 4-6 3" ones last in a 29g?
