So here is the scoop.. Right now I have a ~7" female Fh in a 75 gallon by herself.. She is pretty damn agressive and killed anything and everything I tried to keep with her while she was in the previous 55.

I just recentley aquired a 3" Jag that is very colorful and is starting to become a very personable fish at such a small size. He/she is in a 55 with some plecos right now...

I am debating wether or not I should part with my Fh and give the jag the 75 to grow out in, or to keep the FH and try to find some tankmates in the 75.

She is a great fish but is not top quality and because she is a female she won't grow nearly as big or be nearly as impressive as a male which is part of the reason I want the 75 for the Jag.

Here are some pix of the flowerhorn in question...

She is a nice looking fish but I would much rather get a male Flowerhorn. Her last picture is awesome. Those things are FREAKS! :)

I would much rather get a male as well... I bought her like a year and a half ago from the petstore I was working at... I knew nothing about flowerhorns then... I just picked the fish with the best pearls and unfortunately it was a female :(

haha thanks, give yours some time and im sure that you'll get a nice looking one as well!

So here are some questions... at what size should I be upgrading the Jag to a bigger tank? And... how large do the female FH get? Is she about full grown, or does she have some more growth in her?

Also, what do you think about tankmates if I do keep this FH in the 75?

I think you should upgrade the jag as soon as it seems to small for him, if i had a jag in a 55 i would do it asap.

FLOWER HORNS GET HUGE!! 14in, i recall redtailfool saying he say he saw one 18-28in, thats probly rare though, males just have that hump on their head and get slightly larger i believe.

Tried Plecos with no luck... It would have to be huge to take the abuse from this fish... she is relentless! I tried to keep a male FH with her.. and she killed the poor guy while I was at work. This was when she was probably 4" and the male was easily 7 or 8"

If I do decide to keep her, She will more than likely stay in the 75 by herself and i'll pick up a 75 or larger for the Jag when the time comes.

always remember that 90/95% majority of zz flowerhorn females have a black blotch in there dorsal fin, u can see that in the pics.

put her back in the 55.... for a 7 incher that will be big enough for her. this will make her body rounder. plus of course there is still the possibility that your fish is a male fh. if that'll be the case, the 55 will force him to grow some kok. put a mirror outside the tank every thursday and friday. starve the fish every friday. then take-out the miror by saturday right before you feed him. Do this in a month or two and you'll see a big difference. try feeding him some grounded chicken or beef heart. just make sure you remove the white parts.

thats a new schedule for care of a flowerhorn, is that working for your fish? im gonna try it to see. i have a bacara #4 AND HIS HEAD IS JUST STARTING TO SQUARE UP AT 5 INCHES, BUT NOT THAT EXTREME THAT I WANT IN A KAMFA STRAIN. MAYBE I SHOULD POST A PIC TO SEE IF ANYONE CAN GUESS WHAT HES MIXED WITH.

He/she is back in the 55 and is getting the mirror treatment fairly often... are you suggesting that I leave it there for two full days? I would think that would stress the $hit out of my fish....

IT WONT STRESS THEM. JUST MAKES EM MAD. THAT AND A GOOD DIET AND A MALE WILL PUMP UP. THEY FIGHT UNTIL ONE IS DOMINANT, SO A MIRROR WILL NEVER HURT YOUR FISH AND WHEN YOU TAKE IT AWAY, IT FEELS LIKE IT HAS DEFENDED ITS TERRITORY. BUILD THE EGO. IF YOU HAVE A LARGE MATURE MALE, PUT IT WITH HIM AND WATCH HIS BEHAVIOR. YOU MAY NEED A NEUTRAL TANK FOR THAT TO EVEN THE FIELD BECAUSE THERE IS NO DOUBT THAT YOUR FISH HAS THE RUN OF THAT TANK.

I'm still not conviced that 2 days with a mirror is good for my fish... :feedback:

:) just give it a day with the mirror then.... This really work! At least this will cost you nothing compared to putting in a target fish (prefferably a tinfoil) for your FH to bully (which i occasionally do). he he he.... The KOK is made up of water and fats which your fish store. If he finds competition, he will naturally store fats and eat more. Dieting your fish is also a must. Not only that he will eat more when food is available, it'll also be easier to introduce and experiment with different kind of fish food. Consider a very HIGH protein diet while its still young. Making your FH really agressive is the key to a more beautifull (brighter color/monster hump) FH. That schedule worked for me... Since FH is pretty new, there are no real Guideline to follow in improving its beauty.... One of the many reasons why i love it so much! You get to test and experiment with a lot of things (fishfood, diet, water qulity, temp.)... Genes may be a big factor, but its the effort, research, experimentations, and anticipation (hope) of making your FH a "monster FH" that makes this hobby addicting...its so nice to know that you're in this hobby too.... I would want to hear from you more... Please update me with your FH... Im sure i would learn more from your experiences as you go along....lpost a pic of your FH so we can can compare improvements later. :headbang2
