Are you talking about aros in general, or just silvers, or just asians? Arapaima live for quite a long time.

I had an arowana in the late eighties that I had for a few years. He'd be over twenty years old by now. Does this count???

Well mine aren't old, because I haven't had them too long. I have seen some pretty old ones. There is a shop in Seattle that has a few old silver and blacks.

Thats nice to hear..they must have been brought there by their owners because they out grew their tank.. You just never hear anything about 30 inch older arows.. I wonder how long they keep growing ...how many years until they are mature.. i can't believe no one has some older Arrow's..

ur silver looks young for 4 years. usually around 4 they get that adult look in the face. yours looks barely 2 or 3 years old. mines about 3 years old and she's already gettin the adult look. i love it.

24" silver, about 3 years old.

16"ish silver, about 9 months.

and i have no plans to get rid of them, ever. the bigger they get, the bigger tank im getting.

so, uh, what happens to everybodiy's aros? you kill them off? SHouldn't they normally be living 10-15 years? Pretty sad that all these wonderful expert "monster fish" keepers can't keep their aros alive more than a couple of years.

Not pointing fingers... just curious. I am shocked that nobody has any older fish.. or perhaps those who do just keep quiet about it.

I've had neon tetras longer than 4 years...

That's what i was wondering ..i know we have been through alot of jumping arrows but what happens to all the rest... it happened to me too.. i have a big heavy board on the tank now... it seems like we are always buying an Arrow but never mention our big old guys..and we certainly feed them with expertise and so why aren't they surviving..and florishing.. I hope they are keeping quiet but why would they....i would want to tell everybody..

I cannot speak for the guys in the states, but around here, lots of the older Asian aros are traded in to farms for their breeding programs. There are many who actually do nothing but buy mature aros to resupply the farms hence why not that many keepers have aros that are more then a few years old. Speaking for myself, all my mature aros are transferred into fiber glass tanks for breeding purposes as well except for one.

I think alot of people trade their fish in before the 4 year mark, most people just get bored and want something new. Or they realize that the aro is just to big for their bank book.

most aro owners dont go on the internet maybe. when i had my first aro, i had it for over 4 years then my mom drained the tank to maybe 5 inches and it died. if she didn't do that, i would still have that one today n it would be almost 11 years old. ***** happens sometimes n its not like monster aro keepers are proud of it, it jus happens. do you keep aro's? do u keep them for 5-10 years? its almost easier said then done. its a fish, keeping one for years n years isn't something anyone can jus do. it requires more feeding, continues upkeep of the tank, massive upgrades over time. some people aint cut out for it and end up sellin it off b4 it even hits 3 years old.

Believe me i understand what can go wrong.. it happened to me too.. my Arow jumped to his death and he was almost 30 inches and just past 3 years old.. now this one is 2 years old and 24 inches.. {in Photo} but i just wanted to know how many actually get to live a long life.. or are they all doomed to live a few years only.. I thought it would really be neat to see some Arow's in their prime and hear some good storys of success and maybe even learn a thing or two..

Many aros do live a long life. They are just seldom or never seen since most live in mud ponds in breeding facilities. I have seen some aro farms that are producing F4. On the average a Asian aro takes 3 to 5 years so for that to happen means it has to pass 4 generations to get to F4.

That is great to know.. do you have some that have lived a long time in captivity.. because the breeding ponds are a very natural place for the Arowana..what can we do to improve their life span in our tanks,,, this is 2006 ..you would think they would come up with a special Arow tank where they could jump and not get hurt.. you know like a top inside cushioned, non toxic, that would stand up to water.. .. anyway thank you for info.. just want mine to live a long life...

:iagree:
I have had a few and always sold them on. jardini and Silver arowana. I enjoyed owning them and growing them on. I did this for years with all sorts of fish I used to trade them back in at my mates shop and get another small one and some credit.:D

an extension on an already tall tank jus makes it more difficult to clean. jumpings there nature n all we can do is learn to live with it. i still hate my mom for killing my old silver, it woulda been almost 11 years old or so by now. damn it.

IMO, as long as your aro gets a good varied diet, space, quality water & care, there is no reason why it wouldn't live a long fruitful life. This is of course baring no accidents happening to it. As for special tanks just for aros, never seen them. Aros being natural jumpers will likely jump at any given time no matter the age. All that can be done is to make sure the lid is tight. Damage done from hitting the top of the hood will heal given time & care.

Hello Chaos..this is true..but how about just the inside top cover for jumpers..so if they hit it they won't suffer brain damage or knock them selves unconsious?? But you are right and i am teasing.. Liz

Never heard of anyone covering the inside of the lids but yeah the thought has crossed my mind before hehe. Then again too much trouble for too many tanks. What some do is to lower the water level so there is ample space in between. This however can only be done if the aros are young, tall tank etc. No worries Liz. :)

its hard for u to say that, whats "prime"? full grown? whats full grown? what the book says? whats life expentency? 20-40 years? so if it lives 20 is that prime nd expentency? what if it lives 60+ years? jus take care of your fish, thats all ur fish cares about. some people jus take there large old aro's to public aquariums. there's one locally thats 3.5ft+ and im sure seaworld didn't grow it from 3". its someone's old fish and its a beauty.

At this point i do not have any clue as to what is prime or old age simply because we don't have any body that talks about them.. {other then books} so i thought if it were possible to have someone who would like to share about him we would learn alot from it.. unfortunatly looks like we are all in the same time frame with the Arows give or take a few years..

yeah thats pretty much it. freak accidents happen way to often. its hard to keep 1 fish for 10+ years for lots of people. i was only 12 years old when i had my first aro and i managed to keep it alive for 4+ years. if i knew as much as i do now, back in 95. i promise u my aro would be in some decent prime. all i can do now, is keep what i have for as long as i can manage. i think the only way anyone will be able to keep an aro for a long ass time is to either 1, have a tank more then big enouh you'd never have to upgrade or 2, build a nice size heated pond. which is what im doing in january. all my monsters will reside in this pond for life and all i can do is sit n watch with a smile on my face every morning that i go outside to feed them and enjoy there presence in my life.

What about checking around in public aquariums?. Seems like some of them have nice fully grown arowanas. I loved watching the one at Boston, but don't have much to compare with in terms of size since I don't get to see many, so not sure if that aro was fully grown. I heard there was a five foot arowana somewhere, that's probably the oldest one if it's true.

There definitly should be someone doing something to stop the injury associated with Arows jumping.. and just putting a board on top will hold them back but they will still be injured hitting the underneath inside top.. so if what your talking about is non toxic ..and non perishable from water and decay then you may be on to something that should be added to the monsters tanks.. ;)

10 years old at size 22 inches is a small arow but who knows what kind of nutrition it had through the years or even if it is really 10 years old.. {not that i am saying she isn't} it is just that people throw out all kinds of ages if their not sure.. but if she is 10 years old that is great..where did you see the Arow? One thing is for sure..10 years old is music to my ears;)

We HAD a 30" silver at work we kept for about 5 years before it died mysteriously one night. They previous owners claimed to have had it in a 180 gallon for atleast 7 or 8 years. I measured it when it died and it was exactly 30" and 15 lbs. Here is a link.

I think alot of people trade their fish in before the 4 year mark, most people just get bored and want something new. Or they realize that the aro is just to big for their bank book.

ok.. what does that mean? do they somehow become far more expensive to feed suddenly at the 4 year mark? if they do someone should tell me now whlie my Pinky is still young.

It means that{ Pinky}Arow is going to need a large tank.. the feeding amount does not change much. and sometimes it actually decreases because a growing Arow needs a little more...:D

my 180 is 24" front to back and he's maybe 2" longer than that give or take so he's right around 26" or 27" i guess. hard to get him to stay lengthwise at the front of the tank to measure. whenever anyone gets near the tank he thinks it's feeding time.

must be lack of tankspace but awesome fish.

a 12yr old arowana should be close to max size of 3ft+ imo

my neighbor down the street grew one in a 80gal for 3.5yrs, its 30" already

seaworld san diego's silver arowana is no more then 15-20yrs old and its well well well over 3.5ft and like 12" tall

I'll see if i can find and scan( before the days of digital cameras) some of my older pics, including the one from my son's second birthday party with my tank in the background. He was purchased from Foster's Exotic Pets in Tarpon Springs, FL (727-938-9051)in late '95/early '96. I bought him from Gary Jr., the owners son and he bought six or eight of them from his chinese kung-fu instructor, Master Chong ( I know that part sounds made up but I swear it's the truth). They had a large aro there as a store mascot for many years, from a three incher in '91 to about 3' when he jumped from the owners tank about 2 or 3 years ago. He went from a 125 in the store to a 235 Perfecto at Gary Sr.'s home. I also had a nice blue/black when i lived in NY 20 years ago, and I should have some pics of him as well. Give me a few days for the pics...any other details I can provide just let me know.

Liz,
here's what I could find without digging through boxes in the garage. The first one is at my sons 2nd birthday party in Nov. '96. The second is right around the same time, and no my manx isn't in the tank...just standing on the little ledge on the back of the stand. Thought it made a cool pic. The fourth pic is from a few years later befrore he went in the big tank, a screen capture from my video camera I bought in 2001 when my daughter was born so I think it's right around that time. I might also have some old VHS video of the tank...Is there a way to post video if I can find and transfer it to my computer? Also found a pic of my blue I had in NY and of my pirahana. I'll post the pirahana in my gallery.

Aros can live for up to 30 years. The current record for oldest arowana, which is a 26" blue based asian arowana, is 38 years old. Most arowanas dont live longer than 3 years due to improper care, many arowanas imported today are still fry with a yolk sac, it is very hard to keep one with a yolk sac alive until it absorbs it.

HEY!!! That jardini on your top pic is MINES!!! How can you claim that any of the aros are yours when you know that IT IS NOT!!!

Here's the proof that it is MY jardini... Anyone want to see more proof???
Look at the background of the tank. THEY LOOK THE SAME!!!

wow!
is that for real!
:banhim:

I've seen all of these aros before, and I can tell you that the silver and black belong to aro-man, and that awesome jar belongs to flowerhorns4me. I know this because they've been coming to my store to purchase things for their aros, and both of them bought bigger tanks as their aros got bigger.

I know who snsc808 is, and I hope he will come come on here to apologize to them. What's so screwed up is that he's supposed to be one of our friends, and he also comes to our local fish club meetings.
This could get exciting

way to go, if your gonna steal a pic make it a little less obvoiouse and more un identifiable, like if there are scares don't take pics of them and no full tank shots.lol

Maby a rubbeized mesh on the top of the tank that like the kind they use for safe fishing nets.

Something that you could take off and wash and small enough spaces so the arow would not get caught in it.. someday we will have this invention out on the market because it just needs to be there with all these arows in home aquariums.. and the weight on top of the tank is a must DO FOR NOW.. but something soft and plyable would be much better. IF HE JUMPS AND HITS INTO IT HE WON'T HURT HIMSELF......keep thinking!!!:D

yes that it definitly a great invention you came up with.. i remenber it..but i was thinking of something that would just fit inside the top under the glass that no one could see and you could still put the hose in and clean and do water changes without the risk of them flying out..mine sailed out the other night..he was okay but wow!
