Are these special goldfish.?. Or could I theoretically grow feeders to that size. I know it takes years and years and years. and maybe it would lack the quality look of this particular one..

I have A feeder GF with my turtles that is coming up on 8 inches (fins and all) and i have had it for mayde 1.5 years. I got it (with about 100 other feeders) when it was 2 inches. I never even gave it any fish food. He just kind of cleans up after the turtles. A friend of mine won a feeder at a fair (throwing the ball in the fish bowl gig) about 10 years ago and it got huge! It recently died at near 20 inches and he had the silly thing mounted.

I think the one in the pic is an ornada or something.

Comets (feeders) get that big easily in a pond, that particular goldfish is an oranda

Very nice! I would love to have a tank large enough to keep like a dosen of these guys, not a pond but a tank so I would actually get to watch them. These guys eat like such pigs! Anyway, great looking fish there.

do you think the oranda's bulbous body is all fat, or is it good eating muscle?

softturtle

I know that they are genneticly bred to look short and fat like that (as with all gold fish mutations).

Toodleypops
09-06-2008, 1:10 AM
isnt there someplace in Japan that has like a 20 year old oranda thats like 30 pounds and is like 18" in diameter?? anyway i think all goldfish can get freaking huge provided they live long enough because technically they all are comet goldfish....

am i right? they are all special bred from comets

I had a feeder get around 8 inches. It was around 8 years old when it died. I got it as a feeder when I was a bout 8 and put it in my 10 gallon and it started growing (i never changed water) and then i put it in a 55 gallon and gave it away. The lady I gave it too gave me the tank and the goldfish back 8 years later and the thing was huge!

:ROFL:This thread is hilarious to me. Here we are, all keeping of "monster" fish, which I'm guessing means "grows large, and maybe is 'monstrous' looking" and everyone says that a giant goldfish is ugly.....etc.:screwy:

The Chinese and Japanese were the original monster fish keepers, don't forget about koi, which, to me, are more fancy goldfish. We keep goldies and love them. Personally, I would love to have a huge goldfish like that, they're not as smart as . . say.. . cichlids, that's for sure, but they all have endearing personalities

Someday I want a large one as well. They're so much less stressful than a lot of other fish can be.
