Mandarin fish are cool.

To keep them successfully, I highly recommend the following:

Set up your tank with live rock. Many mail order spots have coepopods (sp?) and other live sand kits that you can stock in your tank and they will reproduce on thier own. After around 6-12 months of establishing themselves, you can add a mandarin and he won't pick the tank clean so quickly that they can't keep reproducing. I have several friends who keep them with this method with a lot of success. Also, they don't do well in a tank with many fish, or anything remotely aggressive.

My mandarine is in a 75gal with 3 fire fish, 1 tomato clown, 1 true percula clown, 1 orange spot/watchman goby, 1 engineer goby, 1 coral beauty, 1 green chromis, sally light crab, purple/orange lobster, serpant star, sand sifting star, horshoe crab, mexican turbo snails, 1 anemone, 3 med chunks of rock with red mush, green mush, and green stripe hairy mushrooms.and a whole bushel of green/purple star polyps.... He eats great and is out in the open all the time, and like i posted on another thread he did the weirdest thing the other day i took one peice of jumbo min and crushed it up, put it in the tank and my mand.. started eating every peace he could find.. SOOO Weird, he still eats the live stuff and he is super healthy and fat... Very social.... :grinno:
