Has anybody noticed Cichla changing the color patter according to the surroundings?

My pBass like to hang around an artificial plant which has thin, tall leaves. When they are around that they change to a stripe format, which is similar to the leaves, almost like tigers. When they are out swimming in front they are mainly gold color and 3 black dots on the sides (sometimes even the black dots almost dissapear and it is plain gold).

I was wondering whether having a dark substrate would force them to change to a dull color and having yellow sand/stones etc would make them have more lighter/gold color.

Please share your experience.

around the corner from the LFS
dark colors will darken the fishes color alot and light color will lighten their color alot. I went from black substrate to natural river rock and its a night and day difference. Its all in your own personal preferance.
