Bloodworms don't breed, you must mean tubifex, bloodworms are the larvae of not biting mosquitos.

I believe they are disc worms.Get a couple of blue gouramies, they will eat the disc worms

I was assuming they were tubifex as I often deliberately start colonies of them in community tanks. I have been told that black worms are less hardy. Tubifex often take on a reddish color in a fairly clean environment. True blood worms, like ice worms are the larvae of flying, plant sucking midges. clown loaches and cories love them and will do headstands buried past their eyes while going after them.

Well I have a 6" Jaguar, 2- 5" JD's , 1 12"oscar ,1 5"GT and a 10"lima shovelnose in the tank now.........Someone told me to put copper in the water.whatever they are they breed fast , everyweek when I do a water change I suck like hundreds of the lil buggers out.

Still sound like tubifex, 4-5 3" corys will eat most of them in a week, they will end up looking like marbles with fins. Most fish won't bother corys.

toxicfish

Ill try some corys but I can only find em abt 2-3" My lima might eat em huh??

guppy

Possible but unlikely, at least they are cheap. You might post a question about it in the catfish forum, I have never kept a lima but I have been told that they are less agressive feders than the other shovelnose.

I had the same problem a little while back. Do a 50%water change. Then do a 25%water change every other day for three days. And feed your fish very sparingly during this time. The worms will die.

You will also need to siphon your substrate. I'd leave them but I add them on purpose.

Do you mean removing the gravel first? If you do then washing the gravel in clean, very hot water works just as well.

Ok I took out must of the gravel and left abt 1.5 - 2 inches (I had abt 6-7":WHOA: ). I put 3 Clown Loaches in it and abt 50 rosie reds before I removed the gravel. When I was stiring up the gravel as I was removing it all the fish had a BIG dinner.(hell ya) I also did abt a 30% water change .. I'm gonna do another 30% water change In abt 3 days then go back to just doing my regular weekly water changes...

That should do the trick huh???

Nothing like natural food, and don't have to spend as much. Great for little fishies too. Those clown loaches should get all of them quick. Botias too. Rare Aqua aka Jeffish has some nice large tiger botias...

The lil worms are in my 30g too. And I noticed that my tsn always has a full belly from them.I figured it out when I was watching him snap at the gravel all day . He just keeps sucking em out.

a black ghost knife. He does the job in my tank. He'll find every last one.

As the last few posts have said it is supplemental feeding and they help the ugf a little by burrowing in and breaking up any bacterial matting, a lot of fish eat them and things like loaches, corys, and violet gobies love them.

I had a Similar problem with White worms infesting my gravel about a yr ago, My lima would eat them if i stirred up the gravel a lil but I couldnt get rid of them. Thankfully I came into my 120 an broke down my 75, an put all my gravel on trash bags outside to bleach in the sun. That killed them, an havent seen them since.

Howdy,

Catfish are pretty sensitive to copper. Although it for sure will take care of whatever worms you have, it might also significantly harm your shovelnose. And if you have other invertebrates, like snails, they also go bye-bye. I agree with everyone on the biological solution: Get a cory, lifebearer or gourami or so. No need to throw out your gravel or to poison the tank.

Good luck, keep us posted on your progress,

HarleyK

are they gone?
I never thought to add worms to my gravel. would it be a good idea for blue dempsey's and frontosa's?

Almost everybody likes tubifex, even giant gouramis will scoop up and spit out mouthfuls of gravel to get them. Just try to get cultivated ones and check them for other organisms before putting them in the tank, most will be eaten right away but a few usually survive so do it often enough and you will soon have a colony.

I had the same problem with some snails awhile back and the only thing i could do to get rid of them was to completely tear my tank apart and start over with new substrate. i wouldn't try copper, I would go with the cory's.

If they are breeding in your tank that rapidly your water quality sucks. try doing larger or more frequent water changes

I managed to get them breeding in a tank where the ammonia, and nitrites were consistantly zero and the nitrates stayed under 20

I had some black worms breeding in my 60, why would you want to get rid of them? I didnt have to feed that tank for months at a time.

i also planted them in my tank on purpose. free food for my loachs. dont ever use copper anyway. it dosnt leave your tank for a very long time. water changes dont get rid of it since it sinks to the bottem of the gravel. getting rid of copper is much harder then ridding worms.

Check back in the thread, I delibrately over fed them in a chosen area, even placing some directly on the gravel while distracting the fish by scatter feeding elsewhere.

I think they are alien larvae and they will hatch and take over the world and it will be your fault. Having said that I am wondering if methylene blue would kill them?
