View Full Version : Breeding in a 10?

Well after rearraning my fish I have a 10 gallon that I would like to breed some sort of food in, probably guppies... what is the best ratio of male/females?
I start guppies at 2-4 males to each female and I use the plainer ones because they are more prolific. For mollies and platys I start with 2 to 1 male to female, they get bigger so you could only keep about 6 females in a 10g, but are almost as prolific as guppies that you could keep almost 3 times as many of.

So are you saying that I would get more bang for my buck/tank if I went with mollies or platys?

I keep a ton of livebearers and always keep them in a harem type arrangement with on male and as many females as possible. (But always keep another male somewhere in case you lose the 'one'.)
Remove the females to a birthing tank once they are noticably pregnant. This will allow them to gestate in peace, and you will have larger, healthier spawns every time. If you are going for volume, this would be the way to do it.
Remember that the poecilliads (guppies, mollies, swords, etc.) can store sperm packets for future pregnancies without a male being present.
Hope that helps a bit,

is a 10gallon good enough to breed some mollies??? about how many male and female per 10 gallon?

just get as big a rubbermaid container as you can afford and put a sponge filter in it . it takes about 6 months to grow mollies to a decent size and they have 30-40 babies each month so figure how many you need each month and that is how many females you need. if you can place the container where it get good sunlight every day fill it with live plants (cabomba sagiteria not rooted plants) and they will breed better and grow faster. dont worry if it gets warm my sailfins breed more at about 90 degrees

Keep your guppies in one 10, and move the females to a seperate 10 as I described earlier. Once you get production, you're going to want somewhere to grow out the fry - maybe that would be a good time to get the rubbermaid bin set up.
Mollies are too big and require more room than a 10 gallon affords. Also, your guppies are going to be fairly cannabalistic in a tank that small.
Easier to ask your LFS to bring in feeder guppies once a week or better still, get your fish onto frozen krill or mysis shrimp.

well, i dont want to go out and buy new tanks, i just figured i have 2 spare 10 gallon setups so i figure why not just leave them running and have some easy fishes breeding so i can those in to my dats to snack on.
thanks for the help.

I would go with the guppies. Get the females knocked up in one tank, let them birth in the other!
