08-14-2005, 5:58 AM
what type is it how long did it take to reach that size how much does it move. the tanks a bit small tho aint it for a fish that size?
Not busting your balls or nothing i got a lung to its about 12 inchs

deD3
08-14-2005, 6:11 AM
i got it for about 1yrs 2months till now..its about 10inches when i 1st bought it.this fellow grows really fast..maybe cause i feed too much? so thats about 20inches growth in 1yrs 2months. this lunggie swims more then the average ones...as for the tank size.. its still alright for now..i have an empty 6 by 2 by 2 tank but my lung seems to be alright in his 3 feet.
from my past luggies, i noticed the size of tanks doesnt hinder their growth. they will continue growing as long as you feed them.as they dont really swim much they dont really need the extra space to swim. slightly bigger then their body length should be sufficient.well thats just how i feel dont flame me hehe
and its an annectens although it doesnt have much spots on it's body..almost spotless..

Nice fish, and as everyone has stated already,

do it a favor and get it a bigger tank

Vince
09-17-2005, 11:51 AM
It seems the tank is big enough. True, the fish does not move around alot, and in the wild, it's an ambush predator, waits for food to come close to it's mouth. It's already been mentioned, he chases the Silver Dollars, but couldn't catch them. The filtration also seems sufficient.

That is one interesting fish.

Delgado, is that lungfish you saw at your LFS still available? Whereabouts is it, if you don't mind.

guppy
09-17-2005, 5:40 PM
Some fish can be kept in relatively small tanks, that tank would be to small for an aro that size or even a sncat but would be fine for a eel or a lung.

sorry guys for posting so late.. was away from sg for quite awhile.
anyway just got back from malaysia..went to there xianleng showroom. man their tanks!!!! HUGE! they had the biggest everything i seen before.. saw one dolloi about 20inches for sale. riggit $688 so its about sgd$ 300+? its not common to see a dolloi this size man. what a gem
too bad they didnt had athopicus over there.. if not i'll definitely pack it back.

Dude, nice fish. But you really need a MUCH bigger tank! Gees, the fish is as long as the tank. Sorry, but I don't agree with this kind of practice, imagine how the fish feels. And I am worried of gettin a 20" fish in a 6' tank...

Nice fish anyways. Hope he gets a new home soon...

That's a beautiful lungfish. I agree with guppy, you don't necessarily need a gigantic tank for that fish. In the wild, lungfish live in seasonal mud puddles. But if that were an african tigerfish, or some other active open water fish, it would be a real problem.

By the way, this is my first post on this site in about five years (back then, this place was called predatoryfish.net). I got into fishkeeping for about two years (1998-2000) and kept snakeheads, piranhas, wolffish, bichers, lungfish, you name it. Of course, I ended up trading and selling these fish when I took a break from the hobby, but in retrospect, I shouldn't have, for what do I find when I return? Snakeheads have been banned! I can't believe it. Some idiot had to ruin it for everyone.

great pics!!!! I had an African lungfish for almost 10 years- got to be 36 inches. Lived in an 85hex of rthe last few years- when I got Spike he was less than 8 inches, and I fed him by hand with dog food pellets. One day he bit my finger, and I yelled, "Oh Sh%t" Let go!!! and he did. I had visions of losing my finger at the knuckle. Still have the scar. I fed him large goldfish, frozen shrimp, dog food, and live crawfish. He would bite a fully grown crawfish in half, chew that half, spit it out, chew it, spit it out, chew it, meanwhile the other half is crawling around the tank...

Spike passed away not quite a year ago- I had honestly hoped to have him for the rest of my life.

Good luck with your beauty!!!!!

Nice Annectens. While the tank does seem fairly small it is possible that it is more than enought for a Protopterus depending on species and activity of the individual. Some lungs will lay motionless for hours on end only to move to catch air at the surface. If anything knock dude for having a book-stand not a small tank. LOL j/k ;) To the "grow more" comment; this fish is just about peaked out. There is little to no more growth from this species so there would be no growth irregularities.

Do you know where this Annectens was collected? Again, nice fish bro!

:( :swear: I'm sorry; But that Tank is way to Small for a Fish of that Size!!! I have several LungFish and all of them are in tanks that our 110g. for an 8inch to a 400g. This is not cool and we as Monster Keepers should know that the Health and Well Being of our Pets comes First over our Ego on What is "Cool" to Have!! :swear: :swear: Sad.....

A 110g for a 8" Protopterus. There certainly isnt anything WRONG with that but it definantly is not needed at all. Im glad you put little fish in huge tanks but dont put people down because you choose to go overboard (which like i said there is nothing wrong with but it isnt needed). Personally i would keep the fish in a 125-180g but to each there own. Fish looks healthy to me.

I agree, We here at MFK are a very small group of people. The fish does seem to be in a good health. I just look at the total body size to the tank size, old school; on what a tank should be for a large fish like that. :)
