Does anyone here have Red snakeheads?

What are your experiences with them? Did you keep them alone cos they ate anything that moved or do you keep them with other fish? If so what?

Just interested in them as my local LFS has one? However, they don't usully stock them as someone traded it in as it was killing all their fish!!

Anyone from Sydney here, and know anyone who can import these things?

I know there illegal in the US but im not so sure about their status in Aus. It very rare that i see them at the lfs.

Any info would be great.

Cheers

I havent kept any myself, but I've learned lots from others' experiences.

They are extreme jumpers. The tank they are being kept in must be FULLY sealed, and the top must be weighed down with bricks/other very heavy objects. Or you'll come home one day and find it dried out--and potentially dead-- on your floor.

They grow 2"-3" a month, if fed well. You can generally keep other similarly-sized fish with them (pacu, larger jardinis, adult tall-bodied CA cichlids, giant gouramies, RTCs) in a very spacious tank. If NOT fed well, don't keep them with anything.

They'll easily hit 2' in the first year if fed well. Of course, they have the potential to reach 4', but I dont think I've heard of anyone who's kept one beyond 3'.

These things are pretty much like pacu and RTCs in terms of tank size requirements; bigger than 240g is needed long-term.

I have some stellar videos of juvenile red snakeheads eating/mauling kois and mice, that I'll send to you if you have AIM...

Eating machines ay?

But generally as a rule, if the fish is at least 2/3 the length the SN should'nt eat them?

I imagine the eel even though it was so long, the width of it probably fit in the the mouth of the SN just right!! haha

Also even if the SN can't swallow the fish, will it keep attacking or terrorising other tankmates like red devils? I guess although I like snakeheads, I probably don't want to sacrifce my Leichartti. But then again i've seen pics of someone keeping a snakehead with asian arowana!!! They were the a little larger than the snakehead though...

Pirahna45, I would be definitely interested in looking at the video, however, what's AIM?

Ha,Ha... Did not look at the date.

Mox, I am Aussie living abroad and I can tell you, Australia really sucks when it comes to keeping fish. The goverment over reacts to anything(Same as anywhere I suppose). Wouldn't it be good if we could get permits to keep these kind of fish, I suppose it dose not matter to me any more ,living in a country that gets the best fish in the world( But we do have to pay a price to get these great fish)
