Well I just aquired another Blood Parrot and I got thinking. "What if I could breed them?" I am new to breeding them but what I know so far are, almost all males are infertile that is basically it:WHOA: . My question is how do you tell a male from female and What size must they be to breed? Thanks in advance for the help

Wait until your lfs gets a bunch in at 3"+ and observe them together for a while. If they're settled you may be able to find one or two with the tube showing. You might even get lucky and spot a pair. But if you cant tell, dont buy. Just go back in a few days and try again.

I will upload pics if I can managed to borrow a camera but I think I have a male and female of what I have read from. One is yellow, orange, with some black on it like a calico(not a jellybean) and it seems to have a long dorsal fin(not always male) but he appears to have a male breeding part. He/she is in a tank with convicts and as the female was going around finding a male he would flash his/hers colors and something seemed to drop down but it was not very big and it was pointed. Now the other the dorsal fin is round but does have a lot of color on it as does its whole body.

Could anyone confirm my findings with this? Or do you need pics?
Thanks again

How much research have you actually done on this hybrid (Blood Parrots)?
I'm confused with your eagerness in trying to get your fish to breed. First with your Jack Dempsey's, then a hybrid of your own creation I won't mention & now the famous Blood Parrot. I've read you have succeeded with breeding Convicts, Congrats... you've passed
Grade 1 in breeding. (beginner) :)
Now you want to skip intermediate breeding (Wild Type Jack Dempsey) :screwy::screwy:
& jump into Expert Breeding (Hybrids):crazy:

I wish you well & Good Luck.:evil_lol:
Specially with the Blood Parrot, because it's formula is SECRET from top breeders in Taiwan.:hitting:
Now there are ways to get a hybrid very close to what you buy @ LFS, but it's not as simple as finding a Male/Female BP hoping the male is fertile.

There are many steps in making a hybrid like this & I don't believe you're ready for such a project.:grinno::grinno:
Step one is
Cross Breeding- I won't give you my formula, but this is the first step. You come up with a Male/Female you think you can use for this.
Step two is
Selective Breeding- Once you have accomplished step one and have the fry & fish shape you're looking for, such as the smiling mouth hooked nose & orange colouration.
Step three is
Genetic Mutation- This is done to give them the curvy abnormal spine that makes them have that round body you're looking for.
There are two genes known to cause this misshapen curbed round body & inherited from the parents. So not all your fry will carry one or both of these genes. You won't know what you have until you have grown the fry out & see which have a curby spine & not all will look the same.

Now you have an idea on what you're getting into...
Good Luck
Jill ;)

Thanks Jill. I am not expecting to breed these right out of the gate I just wanted to know in the future if I ever get a male and female Bp for sure. I was just curious as I saw a pair breeding in my local LFS. I didn't have the money and I went back the next day they were gone. I do not want to breed them right now I just saw it as an interesting project in the future. Thank for the tips Jill and everyone else for answering. :D

Well Good Luck with your new purchase & keep in mind what I have told you.
I have never heard of a BPxBP pair breeding like you mentioned, but it is possible for them to pair up.
But I doubt you'll ever get any actual fry from them. The mutation step in order to get these fish is one reason they are unable to reproduce. The sperm even if both BP's are fertile isn't strong enough to penetrate the eggs and/or make the journey through the water successfully.

Best wishes for you & your new Babies
Jill ;)

Unless you either spend a fortune buying a fertile male from overseas or use another male Central American Cichlids you will never breed Blood Parrots. Nearly all males are sterile and I have never ever seen a documented case that was proven to have a male Blood Parrot. Trust me I have spent lots of time looking. If you can pair a female with any Central American and get them to spawn you will most likely get viable fry as most females are fertile.

Jill, Blood Parrots are a Citrinellus and Synspilum mix.

Thank You for your take on one of my favorite man-made Frankenstein-fishies.
I read your BP Care sheet & it was a very interesting read. I recommend it to anyone with interest in beautiful hybrid.

My formula for creating these Frankenstein-fishies may be different from yours, but I assure you it's viable.
At the moment I'm not interested in running this project. But if I ever decide to run it I've done all my homework on this & have a projected formula to work from. All that's left is to run it & verify results from the ones I have projected. I enjoy this hobby & breeding is very rewarding, but time consuming.

At the moment I'm working on a few projects with Jack Dempsey's. Projected results for them have been verified & I'm happy with the results. I have a few more projects I'm working on with them & then I'll move on to my next fish.

I'm sorry to have taken this topic off track, but I believe I've answered all your questions regarding your future BP project.
Now if you have any other questions regarding this hybrid I recommend asking Chrisplosion as he has a passion for this hybrid.

Good luck
Jill ;)

About 4 years ago i came across by dumb luck a fertile male. i had a pair with a succesfull spawn. unfortunatly they decided to spawn on the other side of my spawning convict pot so they ate each others babies before i could take video or pic. second time they spawned i took a video of parents with babies its on an old photobucket account which i doubt i can acces anymore if not i would post it for you. i will tell you the only thing i saw different about the male that made me think he might be fertile was that i bought him with convict color at 2" at 3" he peeled to his bright ornage parrot colors. thats all i can tell now a days i would say ur best bet is to look for a male that is not so deformed. dont ask y just do. its the best advice i can offer u. i actually have a breeding porject going on myself. :)
