The two common redbelly species-- nattereri and cariba-- could be kept in a 55. You could keep 3 nattereri or one cariba. You could also keep 1 spilopleura (gold piranha) in the tank.

I agree with the Exodon paradoxus. the local lfs i worked at had a tank with about 30 in it. Any sick or damaged fish went right in and were never seen or heard from again. Gotta keep em hungry to see the real behavior though. as soon as they get full bellies they calm down considerably. Just keep em on the edge and you will see some crazy fish.
I think a Gold Spilo or Maculatus or sanchezi would be a good choice. Irritan, Brandtii, Eiganmanni(SP), or Geryi are possibilities also. My choice would be for a Spilo.

I dont see why well fed fish of different species cant be kept together. When I was younger I starved my red-bellies and they ate each other. Then I realized if I really want a Paranha tank to work I should stave my fish.
Hi grovestci, welcome to mfk!
I had a large, fat, lazy rbp once that was very well fed, no matter what went in with it the rpb would eventually taste, then kill it. It might take a while but when one solid bite is crippling why risk a non feeder fish. Some fish are territorial and it doesn't matter if they are well fed. Some fish are just psycho like the Phago maculatus which will eventually kill even larger fish of anyother species. they slash the fins off then worry it to death and are one of the few fish that will kill everything in the tank even when not hungry.

Go with the Exo's but not 20 I'd go with 10......I have a species tank with Exo's.....great fish they have been known to take down fish twice their size.

I think Brandtiis are beautiful fish! My vote goes for them.
Aquascape doesnt sell P's to illegal states, even if they did the buyer is the one that gets in trouble!

Hiya Kurt-inge, welcome to MFK.
You will need a bigger tank soon, crowded piranhas don't stay crowded for long, they start eating each other. Sort of like New Yorkers, heheh.

I say go sanchezi, my p would chase my finger around like my cons. Hey if you can get s. Geryi then you'll be the owner of a sick lookin p. Silver with a purple racing stripe from the tip of its nose to its tail. Very kewl.

So how much sanchezi's can you keep in a tank of 100*40*40cm
liters = 160
us gallon = 42
uk gallon = 37
I vote for sanchezi in the 55 gal. it's too narrow 12" for a full size pygo and a sanchezi would be really at home in a planted 55gal. :)
