I just got a Morish Idol (Yeah that one like from the movie finding nemo.) Can any of you can give me details about this fish?

it has not been eating for about 4days i feed it brine shrime, miscesin shrimp and high protein pellets. any suggestions?

my setup is a 40gallon saltwater tank at least a 32lb of live rock and i have 110gallon water filter.

-3 blue yellow tail damsels.

-1 powder blue tang.

-1 koran angel.

-1 morish Idol.

One of my Lfs said every time we order a Morish Idol the end result it always die and not worth buying into. My morish Idol is the size of a baseball and underweight. I believe it is due to from transporting the fish. but is seem to swimming in the tank fine. I have a book on saltwater/marine fishes, it said that it can be a bully somtimes, Reccomdations is to keep it by itself is this true? if so then why is my Morish Idol is getting beatting up by my Koran angel fish.

Morish idles are one of the harder saltwater fish to keep alive in an aquarium setting the water params need to be perfect and they are very finnicky eaters are your other fish outcompeteing it for food??? are the damsels picking on it??? I hope you have a bigger tank because 40 is not big the idol tang or angel IMO

my 40 gallon is about 18inchw x 3ft w 16 high my koran and my morish idol has the max growth of 16inches. I'm not planning to do to much to my 40gallon because i don't like change salt water, It is a B#tch!:screwy: :(

my powder blue tang alway stay wedged in and also hidden in the rocks.

my fishes have enough food for all of them to eat. i spend somtimes more on food for them instead of more money on food for me. like an example; i spent $50 last week on one day, i spent about $45 on food for me.

Right there it tells me that it isn't that important to you. The 40 gallon is way too small and it seems like you shouldn't have the Moorish Idol

I agree. A 40 with an idol with be tough. They are the pickiest eaters I've ever kept in saltwater. Iv'e had success wtih them just grazing on the algae growing combined with LIVE brine and LIVE mysis shrimp.
Seems like you have a lot of fish for that tank.

And can you elaborate on these two comments?

why is my Morish Idol is getting beatting up by my Koran angel fish.

no, none of my fishes are bothering my my morish idol

Matt's right, I think you should take all of the fish and live rock and sand back to the fish store.

I agree consider the Idol dead, return the other fish, and just keep the damsels!

He should return everything. While at work today, I saw a 40 breeder, remember this post, and felt really bad for those fish. Redtail_Watcher, I know you love fish, but it seems to me (and everyone else on MFK) they you seem to get in waaaaaay over your head.

Atlantic Stingrays
Several Red Tail Cats
12 Moray Eels
Moorish Idol

Please do some research before you do ANYTHING. We are hear to help, and we want your fish to be happy so take them back so they can be healthy. If you want to have a salt tank, I think you should start with Mollies.

Also, the tank should be established for at least 6 months minimum for an idol. I put them up there with mandarins as far as difficulty in feeding.

Yes i'm sorry to say that you clearly have never done any research on keeping marine fish.

Your 40 gallon would be big enough to keep a dwarf angle but no bigger fish than that. Your fish will all die soon. I'm sorry to be so blunt but it's true. Please, Please return or sell your fish and start with your damsels. If your not into water changes than the aquarium life in general is not for you ;)

if u are lucky some moorish idols do eat pellets, but there natural food is sponges. they eat sponges all day and thats what a friend of mine feeds his moorishidol. sponges are expensive though.

Well said Justin

Redtail_Watcher, you say that you love fish but ALL of them are dying. You are abusing them and you don't even realize it.

Moorish Idols need a fully established reef tank to survive. The water quality has to be perfect. Also, the Idol should not be housed with a Koran. Koran's are very aggressive. I don't have a Moorish Idol because I don't have a reef tank. But I have a fish that looks like a Moorish Idol, but it is alot easier to take care of and will eat anything. I have a Red Sea Bannerfish.

I clicked on this thread because I was really curious about someone who was experienced enough to keep a moorish idol and had a setup for them.
I enjoy seeing setups that I can nether afford ( I live in affortable housing) nor have the experience to keep myself, which is why I joined this board.

Hmm...I know more about moorish idols then the poster.
I know moorish idols are very cleaver fish and they are fond of having clown fish as tankmates. They will leap out of the tank at every oppertunity and are always plotting ways to escape back to the ocean. You must be careful when the moorish idol leaps out of the tank to avoid leaving scalpals or other sharp objects laying around or you may have a permanently injured moorish idol.

If a low maintence tank is desired, why overstock?. Why get a very difficult to keep fish?.
I hope the poster finds another home for this moorish idol.

PS: I love finding Nemo and that moorish idol...don't kill "Gil" ok?.
"Gil" belongs in the ocean or in the hands of aquarists who can provide the right tank conditions. Enjoy moorish idols at the public aquarium. Peace.

That is hilarious. I have kept a moorish idol in a public aquarium that was filled with all of the fish from Nemo. I hear that this aquarium recently changed its name from The Living Seas to Nemo and friends at the Living Seas. I am so over the whole Nemo thing. I wish the aquarium I worked at now would take down it's Nemo tank. We don't have a moorish idol though, we have a bannerfish instead.

fwiw, I don't think that you should have the tang or angel in that tank. It's not good for them and if you don't like doing water changes those aren't the fish for you. Damsels maybe? If you are interested in learning about how to keep your fish let us know we would be greatly pleased to help you. At this point though I'm locking this thread you may not have had any bad intentions but, at this point this is pretty much trolling.
cheers and again if you have any questions feel free to post!
