What sort of size pike can you get through the ice? All the pictures I see have been quite small do you ever hook any thing and think I should have dug that a bit bigger. Last of all lets see the tackle and rigs as the ones I have seen are very small rods is this the norm.

Ice fishing rocks! And the best part is that instead of your beer getting warm, it actually gets colder!!

Pike usually range from 20" (snakes) to about 40" here in WI. Lake Puckaway and Big Green Lake are known for large Pike and I only live about 10 mins away from each (right in between em). Puck also has some slob Walleye (30+") and over 10 lbs!!!! Cant wait to get out there!!! Will be posting pics of fish caught this winter thru ice on the fishing forum!!!

Well you can get pikes to how ever big they are in the lake. When I got I hook my tip-ups with steel leaders and a good size hook. Basiclly if u can fit threw the hole u can get it.
This is my personal best pike. Cuz it was my 1st one and it happned to get threw the ice.
25inch kinda small for a pike. Keepers in that lake is 32inch.

Pike in my lake seem very fickle. I cut a very big hole, and jig for panfish with one line, and drop some monster bait on the other line. I love it when the little fish scatter, you know whats coming. I have seen some monster pike investigate my bait, but never had one take it.

No ice up here yet. The lake where I catch pike usually produces winter pike in the 15-25" range. Once in awhile someone will get a 40"er. Tip-ups with big shiners or suckers work best.

My parents report our lake is frozen over, with plenty of fishermen out. I look forward to going out. Any tips for walleye would be helpful. I have a good setup, but I suck at finding them.

I have no clue either how get walleye. Im kinda just going for a bigger jig tip with a shinner or waxworms. The only walleye i ever caught was trolling of lake trout in lake ontario. It was the 1st fish on the day and it was 8lb.

In the U.K we use a lot of dead baits for our fishing it normally gets the bigger female pike as they are up for an easy meal. It works well as you set the stop not to the depth you want to fish would work well in the ice if you used an inline float so you didn’t get snagged up.

I once dropped a dead sucker to near bottom. A big pike came in, looked at it and didn't take it.I was using egg shells on the bottom for contrast, and the pike actually nibbled on the eggshells, but ignored my bait. What type of deadbait do you use? Smelt?

Since where I'm from there are no walleye or pike in my lakes, i Just fish for LArgemouth/Crappie(black)/Pickeral/Sunnies/PErch... I cant wait to go and bring the bobhouse down to MY pond and setup all my traps.. the only bad part is chizzling the holes since i have no auger... but i dont usually get drunk while ice fishing anymore, 5 of us all fell thru drunk one day trying to save each other... ever since then i just clambake the bobhouse,. Jiggin/traps dont matter what it is, i love it. The trick to finding the fish is you need to find the stream of current. Good ol Shiners or swedish pimples will catch u your limit. I dont eat fish, so i ALWAYS release!

With that boom method I would use a trout or silver fish that is indigenes to your lake for example here I would use a Roach have even used jack pikes. But with the next rig the best things are really oily baits with the heads cut off like mackerel or sardine. Then I normally inject them with fish oils so the sent gets into the water. Works for me;) . This is my first choice but have used.
Eel sections 6 inch are a deadly bait particularly for Zander
Roach or Rudd are a natural bait for both Pike and Zander
Smelts are a deadly bait for Pike in particular
Spratts are an excellent but can fall apart if casting so ok for ice fishing.
But my No1. Is still Half Mackerel excellent casting bait, plenty of oil escapes once in the water
let me know if you have any luck and lets see those big boys on the ice.:naughty:
My uncle uses smelt, I am going to try it this year. If it doesn't work I can feed them to my bass.

Ice is still too thin here in the central part of MN, but I look forward to
getting out and catching some walleye and pan fish.
at least u have some ice. CT doesnt have anything:cry: and i want to get my 1st walleye threw the ice and in ct. The last one i got was like 6 years ago in NY
The ice is on it's way ZORRO ... I don't know how you catch fish on all though's setup's STOTTY , no disrespect intended here .. The carp setup I can understand but simple seem's best over here in C.T. I have a tough time catching fish with alot of tackle on my line meaning I get real lucky with just an aproprate jig/hook or lure for the size fish I'am after tied to the line I'am useing . maybe a split shot weight aswell . with lure's I make a small leader and tie a swivel to keep the lure from falling over on it size if it is supose to swim upright ..
yeah i just get a hook and a bread ball. And hopefully it sinks fast enough so the seagulls wount get to it. Ive hooked many of birds there.
I just got my new jigging pole and some new jigs in and there amazing I just need ICE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Has any one got a carp threw the ice???

OK, so here's the thing... Lived in Alaska for a few years in the past (ok 6 years but who's counting)... Well, naturally, in certain areas, Icefishing is somewhat of a tradition. LMAO..... so one winter my father, my brothers, some of my dad's fisherman buddies and I all went out on the ice, got a little ice cabin thingy (yeah I know - laugh it up at my ignorance to the sport), moving on... things were fine, made the hole, started fishing...... a couple twelve packs later, the "adults" were not exactly in top-notch condition, so watching me (13 years old.... and waaayyy to curious as to what lay under the ice), was not exactly their main point of focus.... needless to say, with each beer they swore the hole was freezing shut... LOL yeah, ok... so they kept making it slightly bigger... each time I took advantage by scooting closer and closer, eventually right at the edge, messing with their lines, thinking if I bobbed them enough the fish would bite, and I would get to catch and disect them.... yes yes yes the biologist in me was present even then.... wellllll, I bobbed away, leaned further and further over the edge of the hole (which was now about the size of a small table top), and well..... somehow lost my grip and fell in the hole. LMAO never seen my dad sober up so fast in his whole life!! Well, they got me out, stripped me down, wrapped me in blankets and I pretty much ended the day of fishing as they drove me home and made me take a long bath. Sometime after that, my sister and I were goofin off by one of the glaciers, there was an area of water almost like a pond, yet connected to the main body by a small inlet... well it looked frozen solid, so we walked accross it..... I fell in... had to haul a$$ back to the car, strip down, and find the only thing in the car to put around me.... the dog blanket and my dad's slicker, lol. ... EEEWWW. Well, thought I was gonna die waiting for my dad to get back to the car, and my sister took forever getting him, so ok yeah I was a bit of a drama queen and was balling in the back of the van - but hellooo it was -30, i was butt naked, wet, and freezing thinking I was surely going to get hypothermia, lol. Well... obviously I survived.. From this day forward though... Ice and me just dont mix!! So no, you won't catch me icefishing anytime in the near future unless you are amazingly brilliant and trick me - or offer me a really really good deal, LOL. But to all y'all who like it - more power to ya - and don't get drunk and decide your hole is too small................................ ok, that came out wrong.
