View Full Version : info on Boulengerochromis microlepis
hi guys, can you share some information about Boulengerochromis microlepis and some hands on experience with them? what's its grow rate, usually maximum size in tank aquaria? possible aggressiveness with tankmates? can i easily get it of feeders when its been used to it?
i'm thinking of adding a 15" microlepis with a 10" peacock bass, would there be any problems with aggression? i've also got a motoro and endlicheri bichir there :)

Hey Kido,
Here is an older post on Boulengerochromis microlepis:
http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3145
I currently have 6 Boulengerochromis right now. The growth rate of these guys is one of the fastest I have seen in cichlids. In the wild, the maximum size is 39" but reports say that they avaerage about 30" I woukld expect to see the same 30" in the Aquarium if given enough roomand food.
Aggressivenes to tank mates. Well the Emperors are very aggressive to each other and will kill each other eventually. Mine are about 9-10" now and if I didn’t have 6 of them to help distribute the aggression and other tank mates they would have definitely killed each other long ago. They do show agression to opther tank mates but not as much as the what they show to conspecifics.
Feeding emperors is easy. I feed mine pellets only and that is that it has been taking. If it has been on feeders and you want to get it eating pellets. If it doesn't take it first. Try housing a fish that realy takes pellets.
15" Emp with a 10" Pbass?? I don't think that is a good idea. I had a 6" Temensis with my 6" (at that time) Emperors. The Emps ate pellets like no tomorrow and hence grew faster. As soon as they hit the 6.5"-7" they bullied the Temensis to death. Maybe if the Pbass was a bit bigger it might work. Not saying the mix wont work. I have mixed many fish before that people say wont work. Anything MIGHT WORK, but the key is to watch closely to try make sure nothing dies.
The Emperor may also grow so fast that it might eat your bichir and nip on your motoro. Emps tend to be nippers in my experience. If you have an extra tank for it, I would definitely pick it up as it is quite a hard fish to find especially in the Philippines.
Hope this helps. Let me know if I can answer any more questions.
thanks jed, appreciate the info ;)
i really don't have a spare tank so i might pass up on them if that's the case.. there no use putting them in my tank if all hell breaks loose :D

theres someone selling his microlepsis here n da phils? how much is he selling it?
hey jed, something came up and i'm probably goin to get one of these guys :)
some additional questions though.. do you think a male or a female would be better off with tankmates of different species? which one is more likely less aggressive towards tankmates? also i've heard that males are more colorful right? in what way? is there a big difference in your experience? thanks :)

I'm not sure how to sex these fish but I've seen a video of them in the wild and they were an adult pair. Both Males and females are colorful so I guess it really wouldn't matter which one you get.

Yeah it sucks. Dude. if the source ur getting them from has more than 1, u should get more. Try to breed them. Breeding the Emperors has always been a dream of mine. So if they breed you can dump a bunch of them in my Dad's pond. LOL!

unfortunately, i'm not really into breeding.. and i doubt i'd have enough room to breed these guys :D .. anyway, thanks again for the help.. i'll just post some pics when i get mine ;)
My insight- The 2 Emps I had (which came from Trust) didn't show any aggression towards each other while they had smaller tankmates to hassle/eat but once I put in a divider and they no longer had others to beat on then the real aggression began. The dominant fish (same size but showed much better coloration) constantly attacked the other until I was forced to isolate them from each other. I decided I'd had enough and ended up selling both individually. I think your plan to get just one sounds good. Good luck.
