is this normal behavior ????

im new to bichirs and hes my first one

he just hovers in that area i first though something was wrong, but has full color and is flappin away his fins, the signs of a healthy fish, whats going on?

I have some...does yours have a cave to hide in? Mine stay in the caves during the day and come out around 7 of 8 pm. what else is in there with him?

fairly normal mine stayed close to the surface when they were young -Anne

yeah i think that's normal behavior.. you should actually count yourself lucky that you have a fairly active bichir which you could see.. some hide all day and only come out at night :(

thankfully all my bichirs are fairly active and are mostly swimming around often.. that's the first thing i look for when buying new bichirs, is to look for one that's active :thumbsup:

yeap he was active, he was in a small tank with a baby jardini, another bichir and afew dats all babys of coarse.

Yep bichirs have lungs and often gulp air I had an ornate live in plants close to the surface for months -Anne

has anyones ornate swim up and down on one side of the tank for minutes at a time mine does this at first i thought it was tank size but when i moved him to the 150 he started doing this again any ideas?

I see . New bichirs are always very active when newly introduced.
It will most likely settle down in a dew days. I hope it wont but thats
what i usually notice with ornates. Senagalus are the most active imo.

this afternoon i cut some pcs pipe and put it in my tank. till he gets bigger im gunna leave it in for his safety so the other fish dont trample his tiny butt.

just to further comfort you - mine hang around the surface a lot as well...in approx. the same pose as I see in that pic.
