for gauchuas and all the dwarf species. the male's head is bigger than the female's of the same size. the male's head bulges out more where the jaw line ends. (cheek)

and from what i knoe... its very hard to determine the sex for larger specimens of SH.



juss looking at my gauchuas, the male flares out his fins and inflate his head when others come by. he does that to every SH except he attacks everyone but his mate. he will flare out his gill and inflate his head but stops once he recognizes that it's his mate.

also my mail seems to be very dark in color compared to others.

for me it was easy to determine the sex because the male is the biggest,darkest, most active one in the tank and my female is very light, the white color from his belly comes up to the eye in the cheek area and she has a 1 large white scale? (i dunno why) on top of her head. (like the gems that females in India places on their forehead to symbolize that they are married? or virgins..... correct me if im wrong)

this is from my experience and as soon as i see them mate i can confirm it.



but other than that i am 100% sure that the male has a larger head than the female for the dwarf SH.

oh a micropeltes the only thing i have seen about sex them are this videos from a
member of the Forum from Germany(Raubfische & CO) he has a pair
the bigger one is (female ) 110 cm the dark one is the male and as you can see they are
trying to mate and so he changed his color in black with the little silver spots, i love them.... :drool:

I would have to disagree with most of this post. I raised 5 pairs of gachua in the past.
The female was always larger and had a fuller look. The color of the fish doesn't have to do with sex either, it's all in the body shape.

I would think that a female channa is larger, more robust than a male, in most specie.

C.kerala is very easy to sex, if your male has a more pronounced white stripe down the dorsal. Female is also larger than the male.

remember theirs always exceptions..

sorry i forgot to mention that too. its really hard to determine the sex by color cause when SH get territorial they turn dark. only way im sure is the size of the head. other than that its really hard.

since america has a ban on SH. no one is really dedicated/interested enough to conduct a full on research. im sure fish and game has some info but they aren't gonna release/distribute the info on breeding/sexing for the obvious reasons.

Naw man, female usually has a larger head and body. Us hobbyist have the hands on knowledge, G's are easy to sex and breed. I doubt F&G even care about Gachua.

striata is 13" or so.. If you look at a male gachua it has a large head
compared to the rest of its body. A female will have a large head and
more robust around the belly. So I say its all in the body shape.
