Its called a Walkamin Strain Cherax Quad( Redclaw ).
Walkamin Redclaw were designed(crossmated) at Walkamin Station is Queensland Australia(now defunct) with 2 of the primary people of which are Dr. Clive Jones and Scott Schanks. It was a government project to boost the freshwater crayfish market where they wanted to see IF they mated native Redclaw from the 5 rivers that they are in and only crossed the ones with the specific genetic traits that they wanted- Could they develop a Redclaw that grew 50% bigger, 50%faster.
The answer was yes; ;and that is what I import, raise and breed now.

I will work on uploading some of my personal pics for you all to see BUT until then you can go to my profile and check out my web site for some pictures of some that are 12inches and over.
I even have the Cherax Park Blues or the "Opals" as I like to call them. The are genetically stable and missing the red and green gene common in Redclaw and they look like an opal and are sometimes so white you can see internal organs after a molt.

I used to LOVE crayfish, still do. I always use to go down to my local river/swamp and walk around in the water catching them under rocks and stuff..
One time I was with a friend, this was I guess almost 15 years ago. We found a man hole cover under the water laying on the soft dirt.
It took both of us to get a good grip and flip it, right after we flipped it the mud cloud was so thick, so I took a random swipe with my net in the cloud of dirt.
In my amazement, I am telling you I caught a 8-9 inch MONSTER!!! Being im in New Jersey, this was considered a MONSTER crayfish, most were never that big.
The net was full of mud so I was so anxious I dipped the net in the water with the crayfish in it, just to wash away the mud, you know what happened right?
The damn thing jumped right from my net, back into the water and was gone
I should have washed it in the bucket but I was just so anxious to get a better look.
To that day we always tryed to catch that beast, but I never saw it again.
I still love crayfish... One time I was actually thinking of mail ordering some of those BIG LIVE ones from Louisiana. You can get great deals on places that sell them to restaurants in bulk.
I would have a crayfish tank setup TOMMOROW, but to this day I have never been able to keep them together.
They always kill each other thats what stinks.
If I could keep just 5 or 6 of them alive without fighting in say a 20-gallon long tank I would do it.

It may be a Astacopsis gouldi. If so they are on the endangered species list..
They take around 7 years to mature and they carry their young on their tail for one year.

I caught one with bacon 10 years back that was definately a mutation of some sort. This guy was about eight inches and was definately bigger than any that I have ever seen in this particular creek in California.:nilly:

First off, they're called Crawdads in my neck of the woods. And all you gotta do to catch them is google the design for a 2-liter bottle fish trap, and then make one, bait it with a dead fish, old sandwich meat, or dog-food, and toss it in a creek.
I have kept them fairly extensively, in several different size tanks. My favorite of which is 55 gallon, home to a yellow bullhead catfish, a LMB, and an Eastern River Cooter. In there I keep 3 two inch crawdads peacefully, but have kept larger specimens and more of them back when my turtle was smaller. The key to keeping crawdads\crayfish happy is plenty of hiding places. Several spots to hide for each one, but they may still fight a little.

My friend owns private property in up state New York with lakes, swamps, and creeks in it. I go up there with my crayfish trap and catch some huge brown-looking crayfish that are at least a foot long. Their claws are another 8". Next time I go, I'll bring some back and sell them.

Lets see those 14 inchers!
I had some unknown blue native crayfish. Was crazy but mellowed out in his old age - I had him for 6 years! He died last spring, after a month of going down hill. He seemed to be paralyzed near the end; flipping over, his tail curled up, etc. :(
He was a great crayfish though :D
Man, six years is an incredible run for a crayfish! You must have taken good care of him.
