****ING ****!!!!!!!!!
WHY DID THIS HAPPEN? I CANT FIGURE IT OUT!?!?!?!?! I THOUGHT WATER CHANGES WERE GOOD??????
ALL I DID WAS A 40% WATER CHANGE AND I GET THIS!!!!!
after the water change he had every fin erected and was just drifting upright
then after i got out of the shower he was upside down on the bottom but still breathing
i woke up this morning to find him dead and colorless
i buried him in my garden, he was a massive tinfoil barb almost twice the size of my hand and to think i though he was 10 inches.
R.I.P my friend
b.t.w- i got this guy as a gift on christmas had him for almost 3 years :( .

Do you do 40% on regular basis? Because if you usually do some 10% or so water changes and then one day decide to do 40% you will just stress out the fish which may lead to what happened there.
Anyway, really sorry to hear about the loss. Was a great looking fish there.

My condolences. The other fish seem to look ok so it might not have been the water change.

Awwww...hunny, my sympathy goes out to ya! I know how you feel....Your wondering what you did wrong....It may not be your fault...He may have just died of natural causes!

Do you water change with a python? Do you leave the python above water level when you put water back into the tank? Did your tap water possibly change paramaters?
That sucks dude. :( He was a monster barb!
sory to hear about your loss. i also lost a large tinfoil barb i had for a few years. i had put drift wood into his tank. Throughout the week i did several water changes just to make sure everything was clean. i think that stressed him out to much. He looked fine. The next day he was dead, and so was my pacu.

no miles, i did it different, i attached an old garden hose my siphon with steel clamp and ran the hose into the street then i filled the tank with the yard hose and add a small amount of dechlor as it fills up reducing chlorine stress.

you know what my dad just told me now
he said it probly died cause of the new sand or cause theirs no chemipures in the filter to purify the water

how many times have you used this hose to do a water change becuase I have heard that they are putting chemicals in them to keep bacteria from running wild inside them... do you leave the hose outside when you are not using it for water changes... sorry to say that dad is wrong as long as you are filtering it the water should have been fine and if you got the sand at a pet store they always do a really good job with that stuff... your best bet would be to invest in a python they are great and store easily under any larger tank ensuring that it is water change safe...

DeLgAdo: You live in San Diego where I've had this happen during summer months, too. I spent almost a year investigating some losses I had and found out that there can be fire-retardant in reservoir waters during wild-fire season. It's not added but, is leeched or washed into reservoirs from area fire-fighting efforts. Some fish (usually very active species) are prone to asphyxiation when their gills become coated in this fire-retardant chemical. Once I found this out, I went to whole-home Culligan filtration and never had a problem in the next 10 years before leaving San Diego.

Garden hoses also contain a certian level of lead in them...There was a huge investigation on one of the tv stations here in milwaukee...The packaging had...contains led to keep the hose pliable...I was shocke to find that out! I would swtich to a python ASAP!!!

now that was a good insight (oddball's). My condolences. get yourself a big plastic drum and fill it up with water. put anti-chlorine/chloramine in it (overdose it if you wish) and let it stand for a couple of days. use only 90% of this water leaving the 10% bottom water (throw that away). My drum have algae eaters in it.... he he he. oh and before you transfer water in the tank, put another anti-chlorine dose in your tank just to be sure and also some stress tabs (sera). sometimes i also put feeders right after the water change as a treat for my fish. That is why he is always happy everytime i do a water change. he he he :)

Remember the old commercial "Hey, Culligan Man!!"? I bought a 3-stage water purification system (not RO) from the Culligan company. I bought their particulate filter, a trace metals filter, and a carbon filter. The system is installed between the municipal water meter and your home (usually in a garage or utility room. The system has indicators on each filter element that let you know when it's time to change filters (about every 5 to 6 months). Once I had it installed, I stopped losing fish in the summer, I had no more deposits in the shower or toilet, my water tasted cleaner and had nothing floating in it when I looked in a full glass, and my laundry came out cleaner.
To save on filter replacements, I had a bypass installed for the water routed to my lawn's sprinkler system. I kept the outside taps on the filter line so I wouldn't get spots after washing my truck.

btw- i never told my dad i changed the water,i did it when he wasent home and if i did he'd give me hell and a half, right now he think he just died from the sand and no chemipures and would says its all my fault.
so much for that great idea oddball :(

now that is what im talking about..... a high-tech filtration unit. WOW!!! how much was it?
Oddball
08-18-2005, 1:34 PM
I originally spent aroud $800 for the entire system installed and another $250/yr for filter replacements. There's a lot more competition in the water systems industry so, at the very least, filter elements have dropped by 80% in cost. Look in the yellow pages under 'Water-Home', 'Water-Filtration', etc. Or, just look up Culligan in the white pages or on the 'net.

they make and sell two diferent hoses that you can buy . One is a home and garden hose and its not fda aproved for a reason. It is coated with anti fungal and mildew stuff but its made in the rubber thats why when you drink out of a hose you get the hose taste in your mouth
Now the other type of hose is fda aproved for dfood preperation and stuff like that. Thats the type o hose i use for my watter changes. My pops use to own a food buissness this is how i no these things. Your hose could have gotten some cracks on the inside of it or soemthing and leached out some of the stuff in the hose. This is just something for everyone to think about when useing garden hoses

i drink from the hose then im workin outside, dosent taste funny to me.
taste good to me as a matter of fact :grinno:

That was what made me wonder if it was something other than the water change. Oddball raises a point about some fish being more sensitive than others. I see a cat and a clown, what else is in there?
yup i think oddball is right, tinfoils are more sensitive to sudden changes in temperature, ph and also to chlorine.. i've lost my fare share of big tinfoils when doing water changes bigger that 30% especially before when i was a newbie.. they like aged water when water changing.. sorry about your loss..

you know some hose may leach off chemicals that prevents moldy growth.
But its an old garden hose so im not too sure. It usually happens with new garden hoses. Sorry to hear.

Sorry about the loss. I now use an RV/marine hose for "human
use" never had a problem. I to have lost tb's that are large after
a water change. Just sometimes they freak after them.
