i started a 25g salt a couple of weeks ago. i let the filters and all that run and i put a couple pounds of live rock in there. yesterday i just got a blue damsel to cycle the tank a little faster. my question is would i be able to add some more live rock in small amounts and not hurt the fish or water quality?

you could damsels are very hardy but if you wanted buy a couple peices of tufa rock its hell of alot cheaper and as time goes on you won't be able to tell the dif between whats real and fake

ive heard about how aptasia can over run a tank.what does it look like and how do you get rid of it?
i noticed the other day that i have a white "sponge" looking thing and some brown stuff growing on my rock fast.

if by aptasia you mean aiptasia, the wild anemone.
there are certain chemicals out there, one is called joe's juice , made for just that
i read about it in a fish mag.
here it is hope it helps

and about the brown stuff on rock
have you check your phosphates lately?
high phosphates can lead to the devolpment of brown algae. if high buy some phos.remover usually works
the sponges i would not really worry about, if they bother you just pull them out'
once they touch air they usually die off because air is trapped inside they... they die

live rock helps biological filtraton and gives some fish diferrent food sources. I have heard that 1-2 lbs per gallon is good.

no chemical will get rid of them they will just keep coming back I no this for a fact I had a reef for 8 years and had my share with them they suck hardcore you can keep them at bay with the chemicals but it becomes a big pain in thE a$$ THE ONLY WAYS i FOUND WAS buy a copperband butterfly fish or peppermint shrimp on theres a type of neudibrau (sea slug) that eats them

1.5-2 pounds of live rocks per gallon dont forget 1.5 pounds of live sand too because it really helps dont forget janitors
I think that since you already have a fish in there you hit the key word, SMALL amounts at a time.

Don't you have to give the butterfly fish away after it eats all the aiptasia? Also make sure it's a real peppermint shrimp or it might not eat them at all. Some stores sell other shrimp as peppermint.

[B][I]MMan she could at lease went with a maroon clown fish, There way better. My friend and i are soon to be breeding maroons, But back to the subject, A little more life rock wont hurt it any, i wouldnt think so at least. Good luck with your salt tank.
