Hey i have 6 dempseys and 1 pleco in a 10 gallon which i will move to a 55 gallon.
However, now it is happening what i knew was coming up:fighting

I began to notice that the biggest jack dempsey began to chase after others and that most of the others had split fins. Occasionally, i would see some biting.

However, i plan to take out 4 of the 6, preferably male and female. I wouldnt mind if they bred but i like to keep one of each.

I am unfortunately having a hard time sexing them but what i do notice is that the biggest jd chases after the 2nd biggest jd. And also, the 2nd one turns black ( i think its a female )
here and there. Could these two be a pair? im pretty sure the biggest one is male because it has sharp fins and turns black also when chasing after others. These are the only two fish that turn black.

What should I do with the other four dempseys? I made the critical mistake of overbuying.
My petstore wont take them back ( its not like they know anything anyways ).

Comments please. Thank you.

Well, there has to be a store somewhere in your area that will take them, even if you don't get any credit for them.

I don't know if two JD will work in a 55, maybe keep just the best looking one. You better upgrade soon, though, I can't imagine that many fish in a 10 unless they are like an inch.

What pleco do you have? If that species is one of those growing to more than 6 inches, then a 55 gallons may suit it. IMO, one JD is all I'll put in a 55 gallons.

How big and how old are they? Age and size also play an important role in distinguishing sexes(if the fish are sexually-dimorphic).

Large plecs, even those up to 12" can be housed in a 55 quite comfortably. These are not an active fish, and will spend much time in one spot. For active fish more than the body length for a depth is important, but for plecs, this is not the case.

Personally I would still be looking at a 90 at the very minimum for the JDs, even 2, just because of their size. If a 90 is out of the question I wouldn't have more than one specimen.

I see. Well, i have a common pleco about 3 inches i think. I might keep the biggest one since it looks in great shape and is the big bully.

When I bought the fish that was like less than a month ago. They were still very small but grew very quickly. Ive tried to see if the anal fin and top fin were dull or sharp and also if the color was different but I can never be sure.

Well, I am also getting a 30 gallon tank as well. Vitaliy (moderator) offered me two tanks: 30 and 55
If he ever gets the chance to bring them to me. If I do finally get them, is it possible to merge them to one tank? Ive seen it done by my friend and it looks pretty sweet. :naughty:
But i am guessing they have to be the same dimensions.

Here are some pics of my bully and the tank. You can also see the fin damage.

The last pic is the one that got bitten the most. >.<
