tapeworm
07-22-2008, 12:33 AM
At first glance I thought it was a maculicauda, because of the early signs of red on the gill plate, however it looks like the red goes a bit higher towards the head (syns, fenes, bifa). But if you notice its has a hue of black on the bottom and a blotch on the back, I would guess its an adolescent v. synspilum. Let me know if I'm right Mo'.

Excellent deduction! Yes, you are correct. I received fifty juvenile synspilum two years ago. This particular fish was a much darker shade (I knew that would stump people :headbang2) The fish is, in fact, Paratheraps Synspilus.

Amphilophus astorquii, endemic to Lake Apoyo. Distinguished from A. zalious due to a larger snout to dorsal fin ratio, and from A. chancho and A. flaveolus due to the black caudal peduncle and head in breeding specimens...

C. bitaeniatus is now considered to be a synonym of C. orbicularis; no longer a seperate species. Looking at pictures, it's hard to see much differences between the two. Very rare and unusual fish; don't think I'll ever actually ever see a real one, other then in pictures:D

When I saw them for sale (Ken Davis - fishfarm - imported some)...I was ALL OVER IT!
I showed the male (now pushing 4-5") at the Catfish Convention here in Maryland a few months ago...no one knew what he was...so no ribbons (I won the class with other fish anyway).
They're quite unusual. Mine primarily eat flake and NLS...but relish frozen bloodworms and cyclopeeze...
