Aight, so heres how this is gonna work, I'll post a picture of a SA/CA cichlid. Then the first person to CORRECTLY name that cichlid, scientific name so there is no confusion, will get to post a new pic. of a different cichlid. It doesn't have to be a cichlid you own either. Hopefully this will add a little zam and bam to this forum! Best of luck to yaz all! Gonna try my best to stump yaz! :D Let the games begin!! :D

I never claimed to be computer literate, just sensble, helpful, and not full of crap, speaking of which, you are really beginning to tick me off.
Thanks vitally, could you send me a pm on how you did that when you get a chance?
Okay Peanut Power, I'll try to find some pics within the category, In the mean time how about doing my turn? I would like to hear some guesses on the N.A, native in the pic though.
Desert pupfish are neither cichlid nor from ca/sa.

Apistogramma Trifasciata (Blue Varient)

common name: Striped apisto

guppy
08-21-2005, 6:19 PM
Yep, to easy :D , your turn. As an aside care to guess the I.D. onthe native above?

SORRY, I got ahead of myself,...Right genus, wrong species and common name. I saw that the genus was right and answered without checking my notes. Very close.

guppy
08-21-2005, 9:37 PM
Dammit, I just found the exact same pic posted for A. trifasciatum as was posted on another site for A.cacatuoides which is what I thought I was posting. I checked a couple more sites and while they are very close this pic is indeed the A. trifasiatum and not the slightly more colorful A. cacatuoides. My apologies for taking the pic from a site I did not double check. Nate_N_Nicole congratulations on your correct answer and It is your turn.

08-23-2005, 1:08 AM
Petenia splendida pic#1 the upper one

Cichlasoma grammodes pic#2 the lower one

You sure it is the petenia? The pic doesn't match. The pic in my old Axelrod's shows a Petenia splendida that matches this one and lists it as a red snook

Peanut_Power
08-23-2005, 1:15 AM
I suppose i could see the resemblaces...but the cichlids in post #85 and 86 are definately Petenia splendida...granted they are a bit different color morphs...:P

guppy
08-23-2005, 1:49 AM
I can sure see that the body shape and mouth match, I have to stop relying on color patterns. At least this time I checked multiple sources, I got caught yesterday by a milabed cockatoo chiclid.

CentralMayhem
08-23-2005, 2:03 AM
definitely a snook 100%. rock on peanut you post my next pic and ill continue guessing cause as usual i cant load any pics.

actually there both Pentenia splendida you can tell buy looking at there face they have a flat pointed face... unlike the picture guppy brought up(the 2nd) but they are the same color easy to confuse... So, am I right this time?

CentralMayhem
08-24-2005, 2:42 AM
I KNEW IT WAS A Caquetia spp. for sure, well like 98% sure at least. till i had to start second guessing myself. I am pretty good at all central and south americans. hence the name CentralMayhem. Centrals are the BOMB in my book.

Peanut my guess on #116 is one of the checkerboard cichlids, either the Crenicara filamentosa (lyretailed checkerboard cichlid), or the Crenicara maculata (checkerboard cichlid), I can't see the tail well enough to decide which.

For mightykoreaboy, how about Apistogramma hippolytae? The Emporess dwarf cichlid.or the Thorichthys aureus

Peanut_Power
08-26-2005, 2:13 AM

I just got done going through the entire mongabay index of fish of Peru and looking at every cichlid in the damn country, and the only mouthbrooder that came close was the Tahuantinsuyoa macanzata (no common name listed) so I looked that up through ask jeeves and found this, heheheh,... I think I got it right
so here's my chosen fish.

lol. Most of the Satanoperca are pretty easy to discern if you're able to see the whole fish. But, leucosticta is very unique with its facial spangling.

Someone else post a pic. It's clear I have no idea how to do it...

SteveL91
08-31-2005, 10:44 PM
III and yep, she's still alive. Took this picture right after acclimating the two of them. Not entirely sure they're male/female, but one (probably the one in the pic) took on the pitch black body and red belly shortly after getting into the tank. At the store, they were both showing (likely) stress patterning: you could only see the vertical barring, and the base color was a lot lighter.

To be honest, it wouldn't surprise me if these were the fish driftwood was going to be getting. I had planned on waiting for the weekend, but I decided to head up there today, and I just couldn't leave without them. I'll expound in my other post.

Peanut_Power

hmmm....size? Male or Female? Xingus are pretty anal pikes....so i dunno...lemme think about it....lol. As for that ID on the pike, my female xingu I looked practically just like that except she had a brighter red abdomen and a pure white/silver streak in her dorsal. And since that fish was stressed from being caught, it was kinda hard to ID it....:P

I have very little doubt that they're Xingu IIIs. They both look exactly like the juvi. pic in the Aqualog. I thought there was a chance they were Xingu IIs, but after looking at the pics, I know they're not.

If he was ordering them from a store in Hillside, NJ.... I beat him to them. They were still in the "main store" so I dunno. I'm trying to figure out how to get home the "pair" (I think they're both females... both have the white line on the dorsal) of "Tapajos Reds."
