Fruitbat
08-21-2005, 7:33 AM
'Coolness' is certainly a matter of opinion. Arapaima gigas certainly has ample amounts of 'coolness' but you'd have to turn your entire house into an aquarium to house an adult! :) The Arowanas also have a high rating on the 'coolosity' scale as do the sturgeons.

For my money, however, you can't beat a bichir (Polypterus) for overall 'coolaciousness' and they're much easier to find a suitable aquarium for than a 15 foot Arapaima or a 20 foot Acipenser.

I think they can be considered pretty ancient...how far do they date back? 50 million years or so I believe.

My favorite is the lungfish...cannot get much more ancient then that. And lets not forget sharks of course.

Any kind of aro is breath taking at 2 feet plus. Silvers are magnificent at large sizes.
Blacks are harder to find and the blue on the fins are nice. Jardinis get huge and the
gets the big neck at 2 feet plus too. Dont even get me started on asian aros.

we had some paddlefish available here before, but i've heard that they are very difficult to feed because they are filter feeders.. it would have been a pain in the butt looking for things to feed these guys :)

You can feed them flake food that is thoroughly wet if you feed brine shrimp, mosquito larvae, mysids etc at the same time. there a display tank in Bismark ND that had one. I did wonder where they got all the brine shrimp and mysids, I can't imagine raising enough to feed a couple lbs each day to one fish.

I'm going to have to stick with Coelacanth. Though lampreys and hagfishes are more primitive, the coelacanth was only known from fossil records until 70 years ago. But I have a feeling that you knew that. :D I dunno though, it is a tough one between them.

Try a sterlet, they are the smallest I think @ around 3' max, the greens around here get about 9' and the white sturgeon get 5 meters plus, if they are over 72"s though you have to turn them loose. Get a fingerling, keep it a couple years then when it gets to big, eat it, they are tasty.

The coolest Ancient Tropical Freshwater fish to have is THE SOUTH AMERICAN LUNGFISH. This fish can breath air and can stay dormant for up to 3 years out of the water. You can also do 100% water changes and not effect the health of the fish. They can grow up to 5 feet in length and have quite the appetite. I have owned my Baby for the last two years and he is a hand full. He is a amazing fish to have and watch eating small little ghost shrimp. Mine is only 13 inches long and about the diameter of a empty soda can. They can live up to 25 years in captivity. A very cool fish to own, if you can get your hands on one!

Sterlets are fairly common and are farm raised, fairly cheap in England. they actually get pretty hardy when larger but are delicate when small. The reason(s) they don't do well in most tanks is that they need low temps and lots of O2, much like trout. 60-70 degrees F. would be great with extra aeration. They also get out competed for food when small. I you can keep rainbow trout you can probably keep sturgeon. I checked out a couple sites not that long ago that had sterlets, stellate sturgeon, and siberian sturgeon for sale in the U.K.

There is a theory that Snakeheads are one of the oldest fish on the planet... Before human existance possibly before the dinasours all the continents were attacked... asia and africa were right beside each other. This is way Snakeheads are native to only asia and africa and although they have inhabited other countries they are merely immigrants. So i'm going to have to say Snakeheads are the coolest ancient fish...
