Anyone got like planted arowana tanks picts to share or any other monsterfish tanks with plants to show? Also some information on your tank like size, water parameters, species of flora and fauna, lighting and filtration would be nice. Please also include any other information that you would deem useful to set up a tank like yours will also be greatly appreciated.

hmm i guess the monsterfishes tend to uproot plants in their tanks thats y not many people want to do it. But i have seen a few successfull planted tanks with large arowanas living together with neon tetras and other small fish.

I use small pots for the rooted plants, the fish sometimes move the pots around and dig the out of the gravel but seldom uproot them, I like dwarf pond lilies for large fish because it gives them cover without blocking movement.

I was worried about my pleco not getting enough food in his diet cuz the oscar inhales all algae pellets and so I bought some plants... he did not want anything to do with them and they stayed in there for a couple months without getting uprooted but he is a lil weird and has never dug...

there is a 2"deep base of florite and a 3" layer of sand atop....nothing gets uprooted as the cichla do not fuss with the plants, they only go after anything moving in the tank :)

Other than arowana and peacock bass, what other monster fish that can suit in the planted tank?

sohfatfish
08-24-2005, 5:07 AM
Maybe gars?(anyone with picts of planted tanks with gar would be nice :D )... the rest like rtcs will uproot most plants in one swipe as they are too powerful unless you tie the plants down to bogwood.

Piranha, hujeta, belisox, needle fish, lm bass, sunnies, almost anything that doesn't dig much or eat the plants. I have had p. cichlids dig up and move my pots but not that often.

i used to have a 125gal heavily planted tank (aniubias, onion plants, jungle vals, crypts, corkscrew vals) with a 12" clown knife, 12" gar, and 12" dorado -- the gar especially loved the onion plants which were about 4-5' long so there was a mat of foliage on the surface for him to hide out in -- the dorado would uproot plants every once and a while when he went after food but none of them really disturbed the plants that much -- used to have pics of it but i dont know where they are

i used a combo of power compacts and standard flourescents in the 6500K range and added fertilizer sparingly

i had to break the tank down and move the fish to a bigger tank and i seperated most of the plants into different tanks, but a planted predator tank can definately be done -- just be sure to use hardy and thick leaved plants -- i dont think many of the highly ornamental, delicate varieties will survive the general wear and tear of big fish

Its very doable but id stick with my barebottom tanks for tank busters.
I would setup a heavily planted tank with the cutesy fishes. Just preference.

ONE of your peacock bass tanks? How many do you have? And where do you get those guys? I dont think I have ever seen one for sale here in Kansas.

sohfatfish

Bare bottom tanks are definitely much easier to clean considering the fact that almost all monster fishes are messy feeders. But a planted tank is still much nicer to look at.

you can also grow some of the lower light plants right onto wood or rocks. that ought to help in a monster tank. presents some aquascaping challenges though

I'll try to get some pics up. I have a 150 heavily planted. 390 W pc lighting, co2, pmdd daily fertilizers, laterite, 14 in. arowana, thin bar datnoid, 6 5 in. clown loaches. The aro is starting to think the loaches look tasty, so this will be a problem. But the tank is looking good.

That is probably one of the coolest non commercially owned tanks I've ever seen.

that was amazing. I hope to have something like that some day. I have a heavily planted tank with 3 datnoids. Though they are small, they seem to be at home with them. So long as you get plants that are rooted pretty solid, you should be fine.

we have our aro in a 190 gal,it's planted with lots of swords, homemade lights, sump filter. we've never had any probs with the aro uprooting plants. he's stays on top with one of the gars, I'll get some pics later and post em.

I've got some Minnesota natives, just sunfish for right now, in a planted tank. I researched aquatic plants in Minnesota, and decided that I would set up a biotope of the surrounding lakes. It's not too bad, but I imagine that when I get a smallmouth bass, they might rip apart the foliage.

sorry for posting 2 months later than the last post, but this deserves a look.

not my tank, just thought 240 gallon heavily planted tank with a 14"+ black shark, at least 10 angelfish, adult kissing gouramis and lots of other large fish was cool:headbang2

edit: scroll down to just past halfway to see full tank pic. have a look at the first few pages to see the construction of the tank.
