It's 7000 liter, with lots of plants and no filter. It currently houses 15 LEUCISCUS IDUS ( :WHOA: :screwy: ha ha)
Hope y'all like it! :woot:

Thanks!
My sistha is fillin' it up.
I want to stock it with large fish, but as you probably can see on the left side of this post, I live in the Netherlands.
So it summers max. 29 C. and winters probably - 5/10 C. And that's not even the water temp., that's probably somewhere in the middel.
So I will keep it with the current inhabitants, but they will grow till 40 cm. That would be a pretty cool sight. 15 40cm long carrots SWIMMING  !

Well you can always put Northern Pike in there. I know Northern Pike is also in the UK so they might be easy to get. You can also keep Wels catfish.

Sweet, would google it!
Done.
A northen pike would be called a "snoek" here, and it is possible but then my other fish have to grow a bit more.
I don't like the look and the size of the catfish.

I like it! I have found that lipping the upper edges of the liner with 2"x8" boards mitered together at the corners saves wear ant tear on the liner. Did you use any padding under the liner? Do you have any pump or filter in there? As for predatory fish how about some of your locals, I think you have tench, roach, rudd, and eels available.

Yeah he could certainly add Pike in there but all his other fish would be swallowed and as for the wels catfish i think he'd need a bigger pond as they grow to a really large size yeah i'd say bigger for a wels :grinyes:

I don't use any filtration or pumps. Thats one of the reasens why I can't (I don't want to too) keep many large fish. I don't have the money to have a big pump spinnin' 24/7.
I like it this way, but like Thrust sad a southern pike would be cool, but I have to think about that.

Also if he wanted to keep more than a couple of Northen Pike he could opt for the smaller versions and keep more of them JACK PIKE .
Yeah the pond looks bad ass you can tell he's worked hard 10/10 for effort.

Jack Pike??? Does that mean they are Northern pike that are runts and didn't grow to full size???
I have checked online for pond pumps and a 7000-8000liter pump runs from $100-$200 U.S. plus shipping and they use 150-230 watts/hr. A very adequate filter can be cheaply made from a 120 liter food grade plastic pickle barrel. If you use a showerhead water return or spash trough the set up will cycle your pond's water about once an hour and just about triple the number of fish you can keep or allow you to keep fish with higher oxygen needs like a sterlet or roach. Something to think about, picture a 1 meter sterlet in there.

I want 15 of those! :D
No for real, i'm just gonna site back and injoy the pond for now. Maybe next year i'm gonna work on keeping some big fish, but defenetly not a scarlet. Some pikes would be cool, but it's not all up to me. I made it for my mum and dad, so they make the decision.
And the pond is outtha my reach probably the most of the time, because i'm in college and the pond is at my parents house.

Your welcome, no real effort though, I was pricing them last month because my brother in law was thinking about an above ground pond about 1m deep x 2 1/2m wide x 3 3/4m long so I had the info on hand.

The advantages to an above ground pond is that:
-You don't have break ur back digging a huge ass hole in the ground.
-You don't have to kneel down to get a better look at the fish in the pond that you wanted to get a closer look at.

That makes sense.....
I was only thinking about the effect on the temp. because here in Holland you want your pond to be dug in, because of the isolating function of the earth. So it stays cool in the summer and somewhat warmer then it would be above ground in the winter. But that's just Holland.
My brother-in-law decided to spend the money on a new outboard motor for his boat so we are going to put in a couple garden beds instead :( Here It gets only a little snow for a few days a year, Above ground ponds are also easy to insulate using 5cm thick styrofoam panels between the frame and the liner. The other consideration in this case is that in a few years he will sell this place and an above ground pond can be taken down in a day but filling in a big hole is a real pain in the rear.
The design called for 10cmx10cm posts, 5cmx20cm wall boards (set on edge), and mitered corner, 5cmx15cm capping boards held together with countersunk carraige bolts. It would have held approximately 10000 liters of water. tThe pump would have cycled the water once an hour through a filter made from (2) 120 liter pickle barrels and returned it through a spray bar.
Our initial plan was to stock 6 brown bullhead cats, 1 small mouth bass, 12 bluegill sunfish, 6 northern pike minnows, 1 of the small sturgeon (either a sterlet or a stellate) , and a small bucketful each of gambusia and redsided chub, maybe 12-24 crayfish as well. The plants were to be pond lilies, japanese lotus and long leaf pond weed. The only fish we would have had to pay for was the sturgeon, the ones from around here get to damn big. I am bummed he changed his mind.

Hiya Mikestack, welcome to MFK. Channels would be way to big for that pond very quickly.
Those eels like out of the Amsterdam canals would be amusing, on rainy days he might have to chase them off the lawn or fetch them out of the other pond.

Awesome looking ponds. I know what my next summer plans are going to be lol.
Thanks for the inspiration.
That is a very nicely done pond with good pictures showing how it was done! I've always wanted to make one but our weather here in Melbourne, Australia is shocking...it fluctuates all the time and we get crappy storms a lot.
I might just help out my uncle make a turtle pond he wants for his backyard and then see where i go from there..
Well done on the pond and looking at your project makes me want one as well!

I was just gonna say, looks like a haven for mosquitoes. Reason for needing a filter is to control the breeding of mosquitoes. BUT, nothing can beat a natural predator of the mosquitoes, although we don't have that kind of mosquito eating fish, we have the mosquito fish. Looks like an ancient guppy since they don't have the fancy colors of the male, and they get to about 4 inches.
Only way I can dig a hole in my property is when the wife says it's OK, but I am thinking of converting the above ground pool to a pond, but when algae sits in, it would look nasty...hmmm
I'll stay with fish tanks, or maybe dig a hole in my living room?

The orfe get pretty good at catching those mosquitoes, and i have a Lepomus gibbosus witch get al lot of mosquitoes. And then there is the huge amount of frogs. So I really don't have any problems with getting stung. Luckly!

Ha ha, always looking for business hé? No man, for now I am just gonna stick with the orfe. BTW it getting cold now in Holland so the fish go in to winter inactivity.
I rate goldfish a couple notches above Piranhas. They are a poop fish.... but have more color and personality. I saw a 4' pair of yellow koi when I was in China, and that was a pretty neat fish.

Thanks for the kind words!
It's just the 5 ft poles with the boards screwed on them.

I don't use any filtration or pumps. Thats one of the reasens why I can't (I don't want to too) keep many large fish. I don't have the money to have a big pump spinnin' 24/7.
I like it this way, but like Thrust sad a southern pike would be cool, but I have to think about that.
I've said before, the way you did this is an extraordinary good idea! :)
But how is the water conditions without a filter?
(I made a really good working filter with small costs,
would happily help you with how to do)
Would you mind if i use your pictures from here in my norwegian forum?
(Of course I'd tell who I got them from...)

The water is good, remember I just got some golden orfe (15) in it. So bioload is very low and there are many real aquatic plants in. As long as you have got enough unterwaterplants in, there will be no problem keeping all but the largest fish without a filter. At least, that's my experience. It's the balance between plants and fish that does the trick.

No problem.
woah!
Thanks!
